What to do with uneven backyard

Hello all,

We have recently bought and moved into a house with a backyard. DH and I have not really done gardening before but he's very excited about getting his hands dirty. :)

However, our backyard isn't flat. The front part nearer to the house is ok but further down from where the terrace was built (by previous owner), is uneven and sloppy. We are afraid if we flatten the area near the terrace it'll affect the foundation of it so all we can think of is buy more sand/dirt (have I got the terms right?) to level up the lower part.

How do we go about in doing this by ourselves? What do we need and how do we do it? Or if there's better idea, please do share.

Hmmmmm, I see the problem. What's behind that seating area? (Can you give us a picture from the other end?) And is the seating area entirely done with decking or are there bricks/breeze blocks there too?

I think you might be able to do a small amount of levelling of the earth towards the middle and left of that rear section - and then have a bank which is planted up with shade plants to soften the level change and make it look more like it was deliberate!! You could put stepping stones through the rear bit and turn it all into a larger, jungly shade border.

I think I would definitely level the front of the garden.

Hi Shovetheholly, the seating area is done entirely by decking, there's no bricks as far as I know.

So my lawn is more like an L-shape lawn. Behind the seating area is the fence separating us and the neighbour. And our shed is at the far end of the L-shape.
