Growing a climbing rose through a lilac bush - can you do it?

I have a lilac that's about 7 foot - quite upright growth. Am thinking of planting a climbing rose - 'Claire Austin' (grows to about 8 foot) to grow through it. I know it's standard to grow clematis and such like through a lilac, but what about a rose. Will it be too heavy? If roses are planted to grow up anything it's apple trees (or that's what you read about) so I'm wondering what other people think.

My sister has both going through her lilac tree. And has had for years (has lived in her house for 20yrs and they have been in the tree as long as she been there).

It's like the gardening topic is a lovely safe haven away from the baying crowds of AIBU and Relationships!

Like a garden!
