What fruit/veg can I grow in containers?

(8 Posts)

I live in a flat with a communal garden. I'm hoping to get a few small troughs and pots to grow some fruit and veg in with DD (aged 2.6). I was thinking of strawberries and tomatoes, but what else can I grow? I'd love to grow carrots or potatoes but I'm not sure whether that's possible/practical in containers rather than beds (can you tell I'm a complete novice at this? grin).

It's definitely easy to grow potatoes in a container or even in a bin bag!

Alas, I know nothing of carrots having never tried to grow them in anything other than the ground.

Strawberries need plenty of sunlight!

Carrots are good in window boxes. I do that instead of the ground.
Peas/beans in a tub
Salad stuff.
Fruit bushes

Potatoes are dead easy.
Spring onions
Radishes
Lettuce
Pak Choi
Herbs - basil, parsley, thyme - anything really.
Courgettes if you have a big enough space

We do strawberries, peas and radishes in pots.

That's great, thank you!

Blueberries - you need to use ericaceous compost (blueberries like acid soil)

Carrots - especially the round varieties - are great
Spring onions
Peas!! Yum!! and Mange tout
Dwarf french beans
Salad leaves
Radishes
Courgettes, or mini aubergines

I also grow bush tomatoes in my hanging basket - usually "tumbling tom" variety, but there are a few that work well. They'd be no problem in pots either.
