Couple of questions about A Level grading

Could anyone kindly answer some questions I have about A Level grading, I think it's AQA exam board. The subject is Eng Lit, if that's relevant.

If a student achieves an A at AS level but gets ungraded in their A2 papers, what result would they get overall for their A Level? I know that their AS Level would still stand as a qual in its own right, just wondered whether they'd still be awarded an A Level, albeit at a very low grade or if they'd get a U at A Level.

In a separate instance, if one piece of A2 coursework is not submitted at all, what happens? Do they get a U for that piece but are still able to get an A Level grade or is the whole A Level then ungraded?

From the parent of a rather apathetic teenager....!

Interesting questions but I don't know the technicalities. Is it worth reposting in secondary education?

Can your DC repeat year 13 perhaps?

Not sure if things are changing with going back to 2 year courses but it used to be you had a choice to 'cash in' as either AS or A Level.

Not sure the exact calculation, it probably has to do with grade boundaries, so you can have either an AS at grade A or an A Level at grade ... er E probably

Oh no, she won't deign to retake, she'd rather go through clearing and go to 'the crappest university ever'* rather than retake!

What she doesn't seem to grasp is at the moment, even that might not be an option. We have also told her that we won't financially support this decision but she thinks it's okay because she'll live off her loan just fine without us...!

Thanks, I'll repost in Secondary for more traffic.

I teach this course. She can cash in the AS level to make it a qualification in its own right. AS is 50% of the A2, do you have the result slip from last year that would have the actual marks on it? If so, on the AQA website you could find he grade boundaries for A2 and see what those marks would mean in terms of grades at A2 - use last years and be aware they do change a bit from year to year. There is another issue though - if she doesn't complete a unit at all - and if she is doing AQA A (Love through the Ages) there is only one piece of coursework at a2 which is one unit - I am not sure if she will get the qualification at all. Never had to deal with that situation and haven't got the spec with me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have her mark sheet from last year. She said her marks last year were equivalent to an E at A2 but I didn't know if that meant she would be awarded an E. I know it's the points that count but she's applied to unis that specify grades, not points (though they specify far higher than an E!). I just didn't know if she would keep her high AS or get a low A2.

Her teachers have managed to drag a draft of coursework out of her so I don't think she's in danger of not completing the unit now, no idea of its quality though. I think it has been like pulling teeth for them, poor things. I've been trying to back them up but it results in so much eye rolling histrionics from my daughter that I'm surprised she can still focus her eyes... Roll on summer!

Thanks for the help, I just couldn't find an answer online but I'll go an google about cashing in AS levels to see what her options are.

It is not too late for her to complete the A level, is it. It doesn't sound like it is necessarily apathy to me, it could be panic/despair/ loss of all hope. She could still salvage something. How are her other subjects going?
