I want to mail shot companies and am looking at local companies with around 25-100 employees. Ages ago, I know a reference book existed in my local library listing local companies by size but I can't see it now.
anyone got any bright ideas?

You should be able to buy a list from Dunn & Bradstreet or someone like that although that might be expensive.
I know my local county council also used to sell lists of local businesses.
Try calling their Business Development department, even if your council don't do the same they might point you in the right direction.
What sort of marketing are you doing, do you have any requirements other than company size/location?

Or do you have a Business Link locally? They can probably help too.

Are you still looking? We subscribe to a database of every UK company. If you tell me what your criteria are then I'll email you what you need in an excel document.
Hey Giddykipper - does it show a list of all business's in Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute? Don't think there can be that many of them.
there are quite a few of these! You need to know exactly which data segment you want, including whether you need names, job titles, telephone numbers or just email addresses etc etc. It also depends of which verticals/business sectors you are after. This is the sort of thing which will differentiate the list you get.
then there are quality issues ie have they kept it in line with the paf file, do they run it against death lists etc, how often do they update it or qualify it (by calling everyone).
The best ones will be expensive, but you'll need a smaller list as it will get you more qualified leads.
