Hi. I am I the process of testing up as a freelance consultant in the engineering sector. Am trying to work out whether it is best to set up as a sole trader or Ltd company. I envisage my work will involve having my own clients and also working as a contractor on occasion for larger consultancies. Any advise on the two option.

You will need some serious liability insurance. I would advise limited company to protect yourself.

Talk to an accountant.

Many organisations will only contract with limited companies - I think you will limit your options as a sole trader.

Lots of larger companies insist on limited company consultants as it protects them from the risk that you might actually be an employee
