How do you become a foster parent?

I know I need to contact my local council, and I will, but I wanted some more info first.

I am a single parent (well, I have a supportive partner but we don't live together atm) and work full time (with children with learning difficulties, some with behavioural problems/ physical disabilities).

Would I be able to? I am desperate to work part-time and hoped that part-time work & fostering might be compatible.

grockle, most LAs like the carer to be available at all times so you wouldn't be able to work.
I just helped run a skills to foster course where a few people who worked were going to become respite carers. Perhaps you could think about that to start with.

Hi Grockle,

Both Dh and I work full time and have been fostering for over 5 years now. We have had a number of placements, all school aged children. I work in a school, so obviously that helps with me having school holidays free. So if you think you can make it work, the go for it. I love my job and love the fostering.

Yes, I can do respite through my current job. That might be a good idea. I work in a school so have school holidays free. I will contact the LA and see what they say. Thanks for the help.
