What do you have with your roast dinner?

I'm having friends round and cooking a roast on Sunday, my speciality is gammon but I'm doing chicken instead. My roasts usually involve:
Roast potatoes (obviously)
Roast parsnips
Suede and carrot mash
Red cabbage (the prepared stuff that you microwave blush )
Peas/Broccoli
Gravy

This is what I like, so it's what I cook, but MIL is very traditional and does:
Roast meat - offered with the official sauce mint/cranberry etc
Roast potatoes
Parsnips sometimes (is there a rule what meat you have them with?)
Stuffing sometimes (as above, is there a rule?)
Yorkshire puddings - only with Beef
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Peas
Gravy

What do you usually have with your roast?

Same as your roasts but always stuffing and Yorkshire regardless of what meat we have.

Roast potatoes, loads of Yorkshires with every meat, carrots and one other veg, generally cabbage, green beans, mange tout or sometimes roast parsnips, and then gravy. Stuffing is only served with chicken. I'd love brocolli or cauliflower but DP doesn't like them much, and as he does all the cooking and the shopping in the house I let him make the decision on the veg.

I not sure what the big difference is between what you offer and what your MIL offers confused - apart from you never offer yorkshire puddings?

I would do the meat and traditional 'sauce', roast potatoes, yorkshires sometimes if it is beef (never with any other meat although I know a lot pf people do) and whatever veg happens to be around. Plus gravy.

BTW Auntie Bessie does a lovely frozen red cabbage grin.

The only difference is that her veg is probably healthier than mine except that it's boiled til it's mushy as my suede carrot mash will have butter in, red cabbage and parsnips usually have honey. I might even just have those 2 and no green veg.

Oh, I do yorkshire puddings when we have guests, I just don't personally like them, and DH isn't fussed either.

We always have some kind of broccoli but that's because its my favourite vegetable.

I don't actually like red cabbage with chicken, but its fine with beef or pork.

Usually the following

Roast meat - with whatever sauce we like best
Roast potatoes (Dd1 only likes roasts)
Mashed potatoes (Dd2 only likes mash) - no butter in mine, just a sprinkle of pepper after I've served DD1's
Carrot & Swede mash (mainly for Dh & I)
Carrots (for the kids mainly)
sprouts
cauliflower
broccolli
baby sweetcorn/green beans/runner beans (usually some combo of these)
Parsnips - only at Xmas and only for Dh
Yorkshires - if I remember/can be bothered, at Xmas if I have space in the oven
Gravy - loads
Stuffing - at Xmas, sometimes if we have guests

I always do Yorkshires and stuffing regardless of the meat - tradition be damned.

Roast meat with appropriate sauce
Stuffing with pork or chicken
Yorkshires with beef and sometimes other meats of DH gets his way
Roast potatoes

The rest changes depending on what we fancy, but usually it'll be something sweet, like red cabbage or parsnips and something green (broccoli/kale/asparagus/green beans)
But it can be all of the above.

My roast chicken dinner (when not dieting) would be:

Roast chicken (obvs!)
Streaky bacon strips
Roast potatoes
Sage and onion stuffing
Roast parsnips
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Peas
Carrots
Cauliflower
Brussels sprouts if in season (ie, not now)

No Yorkies unless DH did puppy-dog eyes at me - they go with beef! I tend to make a roast chicken dinner as though it was a Christmas dinner smile

They're the best. Especially if you deliberately make too many and then you can eat some cold later in the evening with jam.

Stuffing and yorkies whatever here too.

If I were cooking a chicken I would do bread sauce, stuffing and always yorkshires (whatever the meat) I do try to vary my veg a bit as everyone likes different things, I love broad beans and had them on Sunday, everyone moaned but tough I like them grin

DSS likes sweetcorn with his roast, wtf (but I do him some anyway)

Always yorkies, if I have my way as a starter with gravy.

But exhousmate makes great YP so if he is round he makes it and it is served with the meat.

either mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes and parsnip with garlic and ginger (try it, just a hint of powdered ginger)

mashed carrots and swede, I think suade might be a bit tough.

sashh makes a very important point about what to drink with a roast meal, I couldn't imagine having a roast dinner without a glass of wine (or three) . To me that is far more important than the range of vegetables or yorkshire pudding debate. grin.

Actually, I have a glass of wine while I'm cooking. blush I find it generally makes the food taste better and even if it doesn't it makes me not care. grin

Too many Yorkshires? No, sorry, does not compute.

My DS has been known to have 9 (yes NINE) before, if I do a roast just for the two of us. We never have any Yorkshires left over.

Btw he is skinny as anything and according to BMI on the cusp of being underweight but boy does he love his food, especially Yorkshires. He would have them for every meal if I let him.

Get a big roasting dish and make a propper YP, the kind a 1/4 takes up the whole plate.

Something green, something roasted from below the ground, kids have potatoes sometimes boiled sometimes roasted. Often marinate the meat, often wine, sometimes gravy - always made with meat juices and not Bisto. We have no traditions with roast other than we rarely have it the same way. smile
