Christening Buffet - Your thoughts please.

Hi All,

It's my son's christening next Sunday and I am just finalising the buffet for the reception after. I wondered if you could look over and see if you think this would be suitable? I'll be catering for 70 adults and 15 children (ages 3 - 9) I've got a budget of around £150 and we'll be serving Pimms and Fruit juice alongside.

Selection of Rolls filled with ham and tuna mayonaise
Vol au Vents filled with tuna and caramelised onions
Crudities with humous, pitta bread and taramasalata
Asparagus and Ham Quiche
Cooked Meat Sliced (Coke Ham and Roast Beef)
Meze - Olives, Sun-dried tomatoes, roasted peppers
Party snacks - Pork pie, cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, cheese and onion rolls
French bread and butter
Cheese Board and Pickle
Smoked Salmon and Cooked Prawns and Lemons
Crisps and Nuts
Red Cabbage and Beetroot Salad
Potato Salad
Roast Vegetable Couscous Salad
Greek Salad

Christening Biscuits
Chocolate Brownies
Lemon Drizzle Cake
Cookie Cream Dessert
Christening Cake (Asda photo cake x 2)

Pizza squares
Hedgehog (cocktail sausages)
Cucumber Crocodile with Edam and Cheddar
Checkerboard Sandwiches with marmite, cream cheese and ham
Raisins, Fruit, Carrots and Cucumber

Would be grateful for any advice as I'm worried that this may be either too much or not enough or I've forgotten something!

Are you having a separate table for the children? If not then i would not do different things for them.

At our wedding we went out of our way to make lots of child friendly foods (jelly, faiy cakes, etc) but tbh, the kids tended to just help themselves to what they fancied off the main buffet and we were left with loads of leftovers.

Most kids will have a roll, some crisps, sausages etc. bit of french stick then run around until they are allowed cake.

I wouldn't make it more work than you need too tbh

@Alice: Yes, I was planning on have a seperate table for the kids - to be honest I'm not really creating any extra work but just making it a bit more attractive for the children but maybe I will think about the choices and cut it down a bit for the children as I expect they will grab some stuff off the adult table too....

Sounds wonderful to me. I have catered for loads of Christenings and try to keep the amount of work to a minimum - because I like to do everything from scratch. Tend to do lots of traybakes where just the toppings change, and huge homemade pizzas. Also helps keep the costs to a minimum because you are not having to shell out for lots of ingredients.

Do you have enough time to prepare all this for it to be fresh and for you to enjoy the Christening?

TBH, I'd simplify it considerably otherwise you'll be having a crisis the night before. Making up rolls takes ages - but if you just put them out alongside the ham/beef/cheese/hummus and a bowl of salad, then people will make their own. Alongside some quiche and potato salad, crisps and nuts, possibly some crudites, it'll be enough.

People will normally only want a piece of cake, so you might be overcatered on that too - pavlova is usually a bit messy to eat standing up

I would do one buffett - don't segregate children - they like to eat the same types of foods as adults

what is your greek salad

I do tomato and feta cheese with basil - as it is easy wink and then sliced tomato with mozzerello chees sliced aswel and soem oil and garlic dressing poured over. I do these in large flat dishes and leave somewhere cool but not the fridge as then the tomato's taste better

I never ever do nuts at a party as I have two friends who are allergic - so thats just me - but also with small chidlren around they are a choking hazard so keep them up high away from little fingers.

I would also do a pasta salad - children often are very happy with pasta and so are adults

on the rolls front, I assume none of your guests are vegetarians? not all eat fish...
otherwise it all sounds yum!
