Why don't my cakes rise?

I have made a couple of victoria sponge cakes recently and they are not rising like they normally do.

I'm not really sure what to do to make them rise better.

Too much egg - are you using large eggs?
Or a new container of baking soda?

Medium eggs like the book says. No baking powder as the recipe I use doesn't need baking powder. I am not doing anything differently that I can think off.

The oven is an electric one.

is it fan? fans dry out cakes and they don't rise properly

r u using self raising flour? try substituting for plain flour and add a teaspoon of baking powder, or just get a new bag of sr flour, your bag may be past its best it doesn't keep well

don't use a food processor they never rise for me with one i cream butter and sugar and then add eggs using a hand held electric whisk thats what works 4 me

I think it might be because I haven't used the food processor. I've done the last one by hand as I couldn't be bothered washing up.

We don't use the fan oven.

no don't use the food processor!! they are the work of the devil for cakes. they mean no rising. electric whisk or by hand.

maybe beat a bit faster or summfink. or use an electric whisk.

Buttercream icing. It made a funny popping noise and then smoke came out of it. Not sure why it blew up.
