Hi I have a job interview tomorrow to become a cook in a care home. This will be my first job interview in 6 yrs since becoming a sahm.

This is a step change from my previous career but an area in which I previously trained in - sort of.

In order to support my application I have made a couple of dishes to showcase my skills - I like to think I am a good home cook.

However I have ibs and don't really bake anymore. Can you share your best ever cake recipes please so I can wow my hopefully, new boss.

I REALLY REALLY want this job as I would love it and the hours are perfect. Tia

How big does it need to be? I'm not sure I have any catering size cake recipes. I would go for a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting because you're not dependent on a good rise and if you make with veg oil they're never dry.

Have they asked you to do that? It might be a bit odd to turn up with a bootfull of food if not. If you're not used to baking I wouldn't make a cake and wow them with your other stuff instead.

Nigella's old fashioned chocolate cake is very easy (literally tip all ingredients in a food processor) and tastes great.

I used to bake a lot but am out of practice. I used to make a lush choc cake with espresso icing. Recent years I have been lazy and used betty Crocker - fil did say it was a lovely moist cake mind!

Carrot cake sounds great and I was thinking of coffee and walnut.

Yes it is a bit mad to turn up with a small selection of food (4 items) but I want and need this job. 50 applications and not a single interview, dh at risk of redundancy - it's that serious, sadly. Making me doubt my plan now, argh.

It's not mad OP, please don't doubt yourself. If they have loads of applicants they will remember you as the one that went the extra mile and obviously really really wants the job.

Have you considered a tray-bake instead of a cake? Less likely to go wrong, and really easy to share between lots of people. Maybe something like brownies instead of a cake?

My advice would be to steer clear of anything with dessicated coconut or lots of nuts... Anything that is hard to eat with false teeth! My granny's nursing home served mainly simple sponges with seedless jam for that very reason.

I am hopeless at cakes/bakes. But Mary Berry's victoria sandwich is just foolproof. I've done it time and time again and it always rises high and tastes delicious and I had to fight my non-sweet-tooth friend off of it the other day!

Ohh thanks for all the links they all look good. I am hoping that I will stand out as the woman that brings yummy food.

Tray bakes sound good. Just off on school run but will make a few tonight. Due to ibs homemade cake is a rare treat here so family will be over joyed. I am only going to take a slice of each. Also taking a portion of beef stew and a chicken,veg and bacon soup I made.

Please wise mumsnetters keep your fingers crossed for me tomorrow.

I usually advise this for children to add veg, but maybe good for a care
home too :) It is a really nice tray bake - everyone here loves it . I may be too late, but good luck anyway!

Well I have made the lemon brownies - but worried they maybe over cooked. Will know in the morning when I slice them.

Bbc good food carrot cake in the oven currently and smelling lush, just need to drizzle icing on both tom morning at 5.30am cripes- better get this job now!

Courgette cake looks lovely - will try that next time fil passes on his glut of courgettes.

Might post pics on the morning of they turn out ok. Will update If I get the job.

Here they are in all their glory.

The lemon ones are amazing and really easy. The glaze is so zesty it takes them to a whole new level.

The carrot cake is lovely and moist but I didn't put enough nutmeg in so they are delicately flavoured.

Quick update - turns out it wasn't an interview just an informal chat but I have a job app to fill in and they have hrs to suit me. Next step is a proper interview and trial day.

He made a joke about not knowing if someone was a good cook until they actually cooked something and with that I whipped out my cakes. Fingers crossed.

Another update: tomorrow I have a trial morning for 3 hrs. I am super excited and nervous. First proper job interview in prob 8 years.

I am confident in my skills and am great at washing up and prepping veg. I am shy and it takes me a while to relax and I can come off as rude or disinterested or I go the other way and talk too much and grin like an idiot. Hoping I don't mess this up. Will let you know if I get the job. I REALLY want it. Fingers crossed.
