Hi, checking in. Didn't fancy anything out of sainsburys mag last month so hoping this months will inspire me a bit more.

Is it the actual ottolenghi book we're covering or any book by ottolenghi ( plenty Jerusalem etc) ?

I had an "Easy Ottolenghi" supplement with the weekend papers. I'm going to do the chicken with miso, ginger and lime tomorrow.

I've now got some chicken in miso and lime and ginger and maple syrup and garlic and soya sauce and mirin. Will be cooking in 10 minutes.

Not a minimalist, is he, this Ottolenghi?

It's cooked and eaten. It's very nice, but slightly odd, probably because of the lime. Also I didn't do the searing of the chicken, just bung them all in the oven. And I didn't do the chilli and spring onion bit. Grin

I've found the recipe.

Ooh never great link. I'm making Parmesan and cabbage soup from plenty tonight. I've made it before and it was lovely but tonight I've used kale instead of cabbage and I've not got high hope for it judging on the smell Confused

Cookingongas · 05/10/2016 18:50

It was quite nice. But I'd stick to proper Savoy cabbage next time, kale doesn't break down as much in blending. Going to get my ottolenghi books out and start meal planning tonight Smile

Checking in.

Thanks for the link Never

From the link, I made the tagliatelle and yoghurt yesterday.

It tasted like... tagliatelle and yoghurt. The pasta and sauce were fine, but it needed more of the spring onions and walnuts imo.
I couldn't find sheep yoghurt, so used goat yoghurt, but it just tasted like normal yoghurt tbh.
So I think if the toppings were upped, it would be great. And quick.

It was OK, but not WOW! like I expect from him.

What's the deal with the new book? (I will look on amazon, just being lazy Smile). It's the only book of his I haven't got (except NOPI), am rather tempted...

I have now got the Waitrose food magazine. Grin

I'm quite tempted by some of the salads in the other Ottolenghi article linked to Never's here
They look exceedingly faffy and unsimple, but I am happy with that occasionally, as a treat :)

Wow those salads look great.

The new book is a reprint of the original ottolenghi I think. I'm ashamed to say that, of course, I have ordered it.

I have nopi but haven't really loved it as much as I wanted to. Will drag it out to see if it inspires me now.

I made the tomato salad linked in the ottolenghi article above. It was very nice. Nobody is going to stop their horse and cart for it, but it was nice.

That looks very nice. cooking. We have a surplus of cherry tomatoes. Maybe I'll try that. Or the prawns one.

I can confirm that the Vietnamese-style caramel ginger chicken in the Waitrose magazine is very nice. Or rather, the Vietnamese-style caramel ginger belly pork is very nice! It did say it's a method used for pork and fish so I decided to go with pork. I CANNOT resist tampering ...

Very excited to finally join the cookery book club! I've been following since it started, but I never managed to find time to try two new recipes in a month before!

This weekend I made two recipes from Ottolenghi. Quite hard to choose two that I hadn't already tried, particularly as we're veggie, with a 4yr old so nothing too spicy.

The first was granola bars. I confess, I fiddled as I didn't have exactly the right ingredients - swapping the apricots and sour cherries for raisins and dried cranberries. I reduced the sugar to 65g, as the cranberries were sweetened. It was still very sweet. It was very, very crumbly too - but not sure if that is because I didn't pack it down enough. That said, it is still tasty and the crumbly bits work well as a topping for yogurt for DS's afters.

Originally, I (well DS and I) were going to make the pistachio shortbread, but when he was counting out the cardamon pods I realised that, much as I love the spice, I wasn't sure I was looking forward to it in a sweet biscuit. So we swapped it for the granola bars recipe instead.

I also made the sweet broccolini with tofu, sesame and coriander from Ottolenghi. I cannot work out the proportions - it says 250g tofu and 450g sprouting broccoli and from the pictures, it does seem to be almost completely broccoli, with just a tiny bit of tofu. Which seems odd to me! Is it a vegetable side dish, or a vegetarian main? Needless to say, I prefer to have more tofu, so I ended up not using about half the broccoli (I also used straggly normal broccoli as I can't get the sprouting kind here. I also used normal soy sauce, not kecap manis). It was tasty, but not so very different to what I'd normally do. (I was also going to make the Brussel Sprouts and Tofu recipe in Plenty - but that had only 150g tofu to 500g brussel sprouts - reminds me of the Friends episode with 'mocklate'!)

Does it have to be in the proper Ottolenghi book? I did the beef short rib (without the barley or potato and with conference pear rather than nashi Grin). It was astonishingly nice. We had it with pasta today. Will eat with rice tomorrow.

I don't think it has to be the book never- if so my recipes don't count. But that short rib recipe looks lovely. I may try it this weekend
