Does anyone have an ice cream maker? I am seriously considering one. How do the costs stack up? I have an allotment, so lots of fresh fruit .
I buy lactose free for my DD's partner, and a general vanilla one normally.
I could buy a free standing maker, or an attachment for my Kenwood Major.
Recommendations please?

Mary Berry does a brilliant ice cream that doesn't require an ice cream maker. I will look up the link for you later.

gallicgirl · 27/07/2016 15:06

I was thinking of this so I could experiment with flavours but it is yet another gadget for a tiny kitchen.

Wish I had fruity friends with allotments.....

Pinkheart5915 · 27/07/2016 15:16

I've got an ice cream maker, I love it one of my favourites gadgets. I've got the cuisinart gelato & ice cream maker.

I've been using my home grown strawberries lately. I've made a lemon meringue ice cream, chocolate it's lovely

ooh thank you NicknameUsed -
I have a small/medium size kitchen , but do have a pantry and utility room , so can house a gadget ( totally ignoring the fact that as a big cook/baker my cupboards and shelves are really rather full....Grin )

Not a recommendation, more of a warning...
We have the Lakeland one which worked OK until the bit of plastic that holds the paddle in place snapped. Unsurprisingly they don't sell them so I'd have to buy an entire new machine. Angry

bookbook · 27/07/2016 15:24

thanks Pinkheart - its cost versus use that I need to assess , though that looks like an amazing machine :)

I just make it in tupperware and bung it in the freezer Blush

igotnotimeforthis · 27/07/2016 15:29

I've got the cuisinart one, very happy with it. Although the initial novelty has worn off a bit and I haven't made any for a few weeks now.
I really should make some more soon

canyou · 27/07/2016 15:31

If you buy a gaget do you have freezer space as part of mine needs to be in the freezer before use.
But as we are wheat and dairy free I find mine is used a lot all year round

P1nkP0ppy · 27/07/2016 15:32

You can make ice cream without an ice cream maker:
800 MIL's double cream
1 x 400ml tin condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla essence

Whip altogether until forms soft peaks.
Add whatever you fancy ( lemon curd + grated zest of a lemon, or smashed up crunchier bars or fresh fruit etc)
Tip into a tub, put in freezer.
Done!

P1nkP0ppy · 27/07/2016 15:33

*mls not MILs fgs!

Eatthecake · 27/07/2016 15:35

I have the same machine as pinkheart it was a present from mil and I certainly get my use.

I often take ice cream to friends on play dates for the DC, and I'm always scoffing it myself at home I make a fab rum and raisin

bookbook · 27/07/2016 15:36

thanks, lots more info!
I do have a very large chest freezer, and about to buy another one for overflow allotment produce, so hopefully will have enough freezer space...
that sounds delicious P1inkP0ppy - does it not need another beat to reduce ice crystals ?- showing a serious lack of ice cream making skills here !

OP posts:
P1nkP0ppy · 27/07/2016 15:38

No it definitely doesn't need any further beating and certainly doesn't crystallise. It's very rich so goes quite a long way so long as DH doesn't get his hands on it

TheSpottedZebra · 27/07/2016 15:43

booky ! I LOVE ice cream, and I make my own. I reckon that if you have fruit, it's easily cheaper than, eg Häagen Daaz, even on price promotion. But, I am ignoring the cost of the ice cream maker in my calculations.

Agree that you need to think about whether you want a maker that has to go in the freezer before use - so it takes up room but also time to pre-freeze - or a more expensive once which you don't need to pre freeze and so you can use as and when.

A pretty basic ice cream recipe might use eg 250-300ml of cream, so 65p ish in aldi, and 10-20p worth of sugar. Then fruit perhaps, which you have, and maybe the odd essence which you probably also have. And that would make between 70 ml and 1l of ice cream, probably, depending on how much fruit, and how much air gets included. Obvs I think that my ice cream is better than the shop-bought ones!

The absolute king of ice cream making, IMHO is David Leibovitz. He has a blog www.davidlebovitz.com/category/recipes/ice-creams-and-sorbets/page/2/ but I'd really recommend getting hold of a copy of his book The Perfect Scoop, which has taught me loads about ice cream making and has great recipes.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/07/2016 15:45

NB I haven't used lactose free dairy creams or milks so can't attest to results or cost. In that case I'd probably make a sorbet or similar. Or use coconut milk, which is good, but doesn't go with everything.

bookbook · 27/07/2016 16:01

thanks Spotted :) - have popped that book on my wish list....

Mary Berry's ice cream recipe

I have made it and it is easy to make and tastes so good.

bookbook · 27/07/2016 21:33

Thank you Nickname - that sounds wonderful - I have raspberries, so will be doing this :)

I always remember one of my grandmother's making us ice cream when I was a kid. She had two tin buckets, with space between for ice, and a lid and a handle to turn the inside bucket. It was loud but she'd sit out back and make it while we played. I cannot tel you how good that ice cream was! But that is not of any use op, the thread just made me remember!

dudsville · 27/07/2016 21:58

Just realised my old grandmother must have been about 45 at the time!

I got an ice cream maker the other week from Aldi, they sell them via the website. It was £15 I think, it's not massive but does us. I made a cashew nut and blueberry batch the other day, my DS didn't like it and asked if we could make vanilla next time Grin

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/07/2016 22:15

I use a cheap oh ice cream maker ( a bucket you freeze , then put in a machine that mixes it )
Best recipe
600 ml double crem
600 ml fruit ( cooked and sieved if for example rhubarb )
Or mashed / blended eg strawberries
Sugar to taste ( I use soft brown )
Mix together , pour into machine and churn
Scoop and eat ☀️
