Help with Halloumi

I've eaten halloumi when out but never cooked with it before. Bought some in Lidls several months ago on one of their Greek weeks (hallouni with chilli)... and it's sat at the back of the fridge since then. Had a bbf date of end of August '16. Decided to do some roast veg and cous cous for supper tonight and shallow fry the halloumi to have with it. It stank when cooking. Is it supposed to??

It was in brine and smelt strongly when out of the packet. Looked fine though. I sliced it up and put it in the frying pan and it smelt like a strong blue cheese when cooking. Once cooked it smelt fine and it tastes fine - mild, salty, cheesy! But I've only had a small taste as I'm not sure it 's supposed to smell like that on opening / cooking. Can you help so I know whether to eat the rest of it or not!!! Confused

I don't remember mine ever smelling very much at all, maybe some air got in the pack and it had gone off?
Don't let it put you off it's delish, versatile and really useful to have in the back of the fridge.

It shouldn't be an overwhelming smell, that said it does have a fairly strong odour when cooking. Ensure its been damped down with some kitchen towel after draining brine. Try not to cut too thin and put in a medium to high heat frying pan with the tiniest glaze of oil possible. Seer for around 30 secs each side - if you're worried I wouldn't bother for the price. That said I'm sure it's completely fine. Probably GrinCake

Sounds fine, I'd eat it, but then I'm obsessed with halloumi Grin

Thanks. Think you might be right hugo... but no I won't let it put me off and will try another pack. I cook with Paneer a lot - use it in curries, so maybe I'm expecting it to smell more like that!
