I love the texture of pulled pork but I don't like the American style sugary coating/sauce. Any ideas for how I could make a savoury version in the slow cooker?

I use a recipe for pork carnitas off Allrecipes. It is cooked in stock and covered with a dry and savoury rub.

I rub a pork shoulder in garlic salt, white pepper & cayenne pepper and cook in a slow cooker with a dash of dark soy sauce for colour. I also add a sliced onion. I usually serve BBQ sauce on the side as, like you, DP isn't a fan of sickly sauces.

I cook mine completely plain, just a touch of salt and pepper as although I do like the sweet sauce there's only two of us and I like to use the leftovers im different ways.

Thank you, some great ideas, and the pork carnitas recipe looks perfect. But it seems like a lot of liquid for a slow cooker, does it need thickening at the end?
