Pecorino Romano in place of Parmesan?

Hi all, please forgive what it probably a stupid question - I'm not a big cheese person so know barely anything about cheese!

I'm cooking carbonara from scratch for tea, I will hold my hands up and admit I usually just buy a ready made sauce Blush but my brother made some fresh the other day and it was beautiful so wanted to recreate it.

He grated what I presume was fresh Parmesan however I couldn't find any when I was shopping earlier so I got Pecorino Romano purely because it looked the same shape can I substitute Parmesan for that or will it taste weird?

Thanks in advance!

I can't tell the difference so go ahead. I think it's a designated origin thing. I'll happily be corrected though

I do it all the time, mainly because pecorino is a bit cheaper than proper Parmesan! It's just as nice

No, it will absolutely, definitely taste fine.

We buy either, depending on how we feel. They do taste different, but both are good grated over or in a sauce.

You may decide that a lump of either should become a fridge staple (as opposed to a magnet Smile)

Oh, Parmesan is made from cow's milk, whereas Pecorino is made from ewe's milk. Pecorino has more tanginess compared to the nutty flavor of Parmesan.

Or so we tell ourselves when pontificating Smile

Thank you ladies!! I went ahead and it tasted different but still lovely!

Didn't manage to persuade ds to eat it though - swear he thinks all home cooked food is poisonous to him Hmm

How old is he?

Can he help make meals? Choose ingredients?

Start with pizza Smile
