Have carrots dyed my soup???

I've been making chicken and veg broth for YEARS but this has never happened... Today I boiled chicken drumsticks then added dried soup mix, an extra sprinkle of barley, a pack of pre chopped veg (slovenly, I know) and then an extra chopped leek and carrot. I've returned to my simmering pot to discover everything is dyed orange??! The stock is orangey, as is the barley and outside of the chicken. It seems to taste ok, but wtf has happened? I must admit that I really don't want to eat itSad

I very much doubt it was the carrots, maybe the soup mix(I don't know what soup mix is).

Thanks for reply. Soup mix is a prepackaged mix of barley, lentils, split peas etc- pulses I suppose!

Are there red lentils in the mix? Could it be those?

Yes to red lentils... Could be, but not that many really. They must be leaky onesSmile. I sure as hell won't be eating it!

Ok I thought it was some sort of flavour powder, and was wondering why anyone would ruin homemade soup.

What did it taste like?

Tastes ok, I think it is definitely edible but my heart doesn't lie to it at all. I will feed it to the farming tribe that will descend tomorrow at lunch time and also, possibly, the cats who are not at all picky!
