If you feel like your kids have a good diet what did/ will they eat today?

I know my DC don't have a bad diet but I still don't feel like I'm getting enough nutrition into them. I'm mainly talking poryions of veg because the amount of food they eat is quite small. So I feel like even though they eat a lot of veg it's always a small amount. So today:

DD (1) porrisge and blueberries for breakfast
DS (3) two eggs and two pieces of toast and blueberries

Courgette fritters with tomatoes and cucumber with a yoghurty dip for lunch

A sort of pork stew that has peppers, tomatoes, celery, onion and chick peas.

They'll both probably have an afternoon snack of an apple and some nut butter.

I know it's an ok diet and I'm not trying to be mental aNot '5/7 a day' but looking at it like that how much of the vegetables are they actually having and is it enough?

Mine are much older (12 and 9) and ate

Breakfast: nothing but huge cup warm milk for 12 yo, 9 yo had rice cakes and strawberries after much dithering

Lunch : cheese and tomato on toast, fruit, 9 yo is at school for lunch which is beef curry from memory and carrot cake, she breaks up today.

Dinner: shepards pie and veg, jelly and ice cream

And will no doubt wheedle a lolly at some point. Not to mention hollow legged 12 yo eating vast quantities of toast, marmite, plain Greek yogurt and honey, anything else he can find, cereal, milk, biscuits, fruit...he is growing at an alarming rate.

Not surprisingly I'm out of milk and bread again, and fruit, and will have to pop to the shops after collecting DD from school.

Mine are ok at eating veggies and fruit, though DS is fussy with veg. Neither will eat salad stuff, which is annoying in the summer. They do eat industrial quantities of frozen peas, sweetcorn, carrots and broccoli. DS has announced he wants to eat raspberries every day, which I don't think the budget will stretch to, he will eat an entire punnet unless restrained.

ds is 1 and eats a lot.

breakfast was eggy bread, raspberries, a banana and a yoghurt.

lunch was chicken and veg soup with buttery toast followed by carrot sticks and humous.

supper will be fish pie and samphire!

we're not particularly careful about how we eat, but I think we eat well anyway. I love having a nose at what everyone else/their dc is eating!

My 2.9 yr old has had today:

Wake up: Milk and two whole grain crackers
Breakfast: Bowl of porridge with drizzle of honey
Mid morning: Banana and a babybel cheese
Lunch: Slices of whole grain baguette with soft cheese and ham. Couple of cucumber slices, a gherkin, couple of olives and a satsuma
There will be a snack required after her nap, probably fruit and some bread or crackers
Dinner tonight will be pasta with tuna, roasted veg and tomato sauce and a yogurt afterwards

She doesn't like fish except hidden tuna, rice, egg or chicken. She is good with fruit and likes roast veg or veg mixed into a dish, but doesn't really eat individual veg on a plate. I would like her to eat more veg, eggs and chicken. But generally I think she eats well. I do give her a daily multi vitamin supplement just in case.

Mine have had weetabix, strawberries, yoghurt and grapes, beans on toast. Later snacks will be carrot sticks, sliced peppers and rice cakes, dinner veggie chili with courgettes, lentils, mushrooms, peppers, onions.

Usually there would be more fruit (they eat tons) but we're due a shop so haven't much in.

I'm very lucky in that both mine love fruit and most veg, they have problems with things like meat and potatoes Confused

Usually my two eat loads but today has not been one of those days!

DS1 4yo - bowl Quakers oat crunch cereal and full fat milk, plus glass milk.
DS2 1yo - 3 spoons porridge with raisins and apple in (usually eats a bowl!)

Both DSs - half my cereal from my bowl :) and 2 apple rice cakes

DS1 - Beans on one slice toast, 2 cherry tomatoes, a baby cucumber, a bowl of blueberries
DS2 - 3 spoons of beans, one square of gluten free toast (don't blame him), one cherry tomato and a baby cucumber, bowl of blueberries

DS1 while DS2 naps - Raisin oatcake and a pear.

Both DSs mid afternoon - probably a squeezy smoothie or handful of dried fruit, nuts for DS2.

DS1/2 - Homemade chicken curry and rice with peas. Yet to see how much they will eat but like I said usually they do eat more, both seem off food today. Followed by Peaches/strawberries/cherries with Greek Yog/Coconut yog for Dairy free DS2.

Both pretty good with veg and fruit, but I struggle with their little and often attitude to food. Both would graze all day long and I struggle to get them to fill up at meal times with protein.

Always feel like I could do better. Really struggle with variety but thats not becuase they won't eat it, its because I am too knee deep in everything else to meal plan and get inspired.

You all sound like you're doing fine!

We are on holiday so normal rules relaxed slightly. Today they've had:

Breakfast: toast (DS1), two croissants (DS2), plus a bowl of Cheerios each
Lunch: cheese baguette, packet of crisps, carrot sticks
Dinner: cheese, salad and onion rings wrap (DS2). Fish fingers, chips and beans (DS1)
Plus an ice cream this afternoon and a pack of Smarties after tea.

I don't think we'll be winning any nutritional awards but we ARE on holiday. Normally I squeeze in a bit more fruit and veg. Overall I'm fairly relaxed, DS1 used to hardly eat at all (to the point of food phobia) so if they're happy I'm happy.

Report
BasinHaircut · 24/07/2015 08:42

Yep pretty relaxed here too. As long as DS has variety, I'm mindful of salt and that's about it.

I am lucky that he eats ridiculous amounts of fruit though.

It's worth bearing in mind that a 'portion' is about the size of a clenched fist so a child portion is quite small.

Report
UniversalBagel · 24/07/2015 13:18

As in a child's clenched fist? I need to chill out I know.

For a child, yes! Obviously that's a guide not a hard fast rule but helps to put into perspective how much they need compared to you.

DS has a good diet, so obv that does not mean this every day but in the interests of fairness, this was today.

Breakfast: Crunchy nut cornflakes with milk

Kindergarten snack/second breakfast/mini lunch: Brezel (large bread pretzel) and banana.

Lunch: Happy meal

Snack: Banana

Dinner: Beans on toast

Mine, 2 & 6, breakfasted on Kinder Eggs, hotdog buns & ketchup (they rejected the sausages), and had egg & chips for lunch, ignoring the side salad and most of the egg. But viewed over several days their diet's good, they like lots of different fruits and veggies & often choose them over crisps/chocolate/biscuits.

3 DCs , twins of 5 and a 1 YO

Breakfast: Eggy bread and raspberries
Snack: Various apples, cherries and grapes
Lunch: Bacon sarnie for one, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, olives, coleslaw for the others
Snack: Apples, cherries, a biscuit
Tea: Will be steak and chips with a pud tonight as it is a celebration dinner. Often pasta/courgetti and a veg or meat based sauce or similar.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 24/07/2015 17:27

For a 1 and 3 yo that sounds like a very good selection of fruit and veg OP. And yes a 1yo portion of veg is pretty small. You sound like you're doing a great job!

Mine are older (upper end of primary) and are having:

Breakfast: peanut butter on toast, apple
Lunch: ham sandwich, carrot sticks, grapes
Tea: chickpea, tomato and pasta soup, yoghurt, more fruit

Not our best ever day (no food in!) but not terrible either.

Ds is 3.4 and a rubbish eater.

Breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggs and milk.

Lunch: carrot stick, 2inches of cucumber, 2 crackers, 7 baby tomatoes (and would have had more)

Dinner: sausages, spaghetti, peas and sweet corn was picked out of it though

Snack: kinder egg

I dream of the DC eating anything like that much variety. Actually, that's not true. DC1 will eat most things but 3yo DC2 (BLW rather than puree but otherwise same upbringing) eats cheese, cucumber, sweetcorn, peas & carrots occasionally, all fruit, all carbs (particularly fond of pasta), roast chicken and any junk food he can lay his hands on!
His meals generally look like this:
breakfast - dry toast
lunch - a plate of cheese, cucumber & pasta or rice. These cannot be mixed in together. I always put something else on his plate which is usually outright rejected and thrown on the floor but occasionally a bite or two will be tolerated
tea - a typical meal like sausage and mash or chicken pie or chilli and jacket potato of which he will eat the carbs and occasionally something else
snacks/pudding - a banana, a pear and some other fruit plus a cracker just before he goes to bed.

I really wouldn't worry too much OP!

DD 10 months old:

Scrambled egg & toast fingers for breakfast. Toast fingers mostly thrown on the floor

Spag Bol for lunch, then Greek yoghurt, an Ella's fruit pouch, and a liga biscuit.

Dinner was a lentil & sweet potato thing then some fromage frais.

Plus 4 bottles...don't know where IT all goes really!
