Favourite fillings for toasted sandwich maker

I usually make ham / cheese / tomato toasties by buttering bread on the outside and then frying on a hot pan till crispy and golden and they are delicious.

However I am drawn to the idea of buying a proper toasted sandwich maker - we used to have one about 10yrs ago but I don't think it made the move to this house. As I recall we used it but really only to make ham / cheese / tomato sandwiches

As a teen I hated ham and cheese and used to have them filled with jam!

There is no point buying one just to make the same old thing I make anyway so can you inspire me with your best combinations please?

Also any recommendations for a decent machine. Our old one did the job but didn't seem to 'seal' the bread very week and there was always a horrible mess to clean up after - greasy crusted melted cheese!

Thanks

Tuna mayo and cheese.

Heaven in a toastie. Smile

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 15:59

Thanks MrsVamos I am not a fan of tuna so I will take your word for that Grin

Fresh strawberries and Nutella

PetraStrorm · 09/01/2015 16:02

Tinned kidney beans in chilli sauce and little lumps of Wensleydale cheese. Trust me, it's delicious (or baked beans and cheese if you don't fancy the first option)

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:02

Oooooh zippy now you're talking! I am guessing this is a weightwatchers recipe Wink

Sounds intriguing and I would be happy to try it. What happens to the strawberries, do they go all soft like jam, or stay solid-ish?

Cheese and marmite, cheese and beans, cheese and sliced mushroom, cheese and sliced onion (if you don't mind onion being a bit al dente!)

Also mashed potato with cheese or ham is yum!

My husband makes them like a pasty with whatever leftovers he can rummage from the fridge - never sure how much of a good idea it is but I guess if the fillings are really hot...

Oooh also chocolate spread and banana - to die for - add peanut butter if you like it! Delish! (making myself hungry now...)

You don't know what you're missing, SuperG !

Try it. I dare ye !

You could try a bacon/mushroom mix ?

Or perhaps turkey/chicken & bacon. You could always rustle up a bit of stuffing to add in, with varying sauces to dip toastie in ?

petra I have never eaten baked bean and cheese together in my life, not a 'thing' where i come from. I have had them seperately of course. Might be tempted to try that one. Would NEVER have thought of using a tin of kidney beans in a sandwich. This is why I love MN!

Egg and cheese is the best!

And beans and cheese! Envy

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:05

I am SO buying a sandwich maker next payday!!! Some great suggestions here.

You never know MrsV I might just try it....

I really want one of those deep fill toastie makers I keep seeing advertised on telly. It looks amazing!

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 16:06

Choc spread and banana ?! Yum.

I want a panini toaster. I'm sure that would help with the leaked cheese mess.

Either that or I must stop over-filling my sarnies. Grin

I seriously am having choc & banana toasties for dinner tonight.

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:06

partyfops when you say 'egg' do you mean raw? cooked? How do you do it?

Cheese and sliced apple.

Superglue baked beans and cheese were made for each other, though I've never tried beans on a toastie before.

OttiliaVonBCup · 09/01/2015 16:07

Mashed potato, corn, feta and a slice of ham.

Found by accident.

PetraStrorm · 09/01/2015 16:07

It's the tins of kidney beans already in chilli sauce that I use. Most supermarkets have them. Lovely on baked potatoes too, or on their own with mushrooms added and some pitta bread to dip in the sauce.

Ok, hungry now...

dontmixthecolours · 09/01/2015 16:07

Haggis and strong cheddar. It's heaven!!

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:07

I love the idea of choc and banana or more intriguing choc and strawberry!

How would I cook an egg in it, I mean how do you know when it is cooked?

I really miss the jam ones my mum used to make after our cheese ones.

I may buy a toastie maker just for this alone.

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 16:08

You can get a deep fill toaster ?

Ah, but how deep is deep ? Grin

I think there's sandwich fillings, then there's me being a pig. Blush

Sweet Mincemeat. Its like an instant giant mince pie any time of year, not just Christmas.

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:10

Don't is the haggis already cooked or what?

I just can't imagine mashed potato in a sandwich though....although thinking about it it can't be too different to something like a potato cake / croquette hmmmm

I am just not sure about beans and cheese, don't know why....

Cheese and pineapple. Cheese and mango chutney, with or without chicken. Creamed corn and cheese.

I really fancy a toastie now!

MadeInChorley · 09/01/2015 16:11

Tinned chicken supreme. Yum!

SuperGlue · 09/01/2015 16:11

Sweet mincemeat - I would NEVER have thought of that. See, I knew this thread would be a good idea!
