Hi at the moment I am no great cook, but I want a recipe book that does simple, nice meals such as how to make bolognase from scratch or shep pie from scratch etc. Can anyone suggest a good recipe book

Delia Smith's always good for basics, or something like this which has step-by-step instructions and illustrations - my mum had a previous version, and it was great. You could also look at the Dinner Lady books (there's a second one too), which I've seen good things about.

Anythign by Nigel Slater, he is totally wonderful, his books are very easy to read and not too 'strict'

Would second deliah. Avoid things that are celebrity randomness! My MIL gave me a good housekeeping one which is great. Lots of pictures for inspiration!

Another vote for Delia - I have the 'complete cookery course ' and it is an absolute bible.
Just looked and its on Amazon for 12.53 at the mo - bargain! You will use this A LOT.

Dinner Lady books are good, as is Delia. I'd avoid Nigel if you are not confident as you may find him too vague. The Family Cookbook - Hugh whatshisname is also very approachable..

I cook quite a lot from lots of cookbooks but I have to admit my Delia is the most well-thumbed. It covers most of the basics so it's definitely a good place to start. Good luck!
