Slow cooker - burnt porridge - help!

Feel bit fed up. Inspired by some of the threads on here I bought a slow cooker yesterday. Put some porridge oats, milk and water in last night on low heat. Got up expectantly and... horrible burnt porridge. Brown on top, stuck to the base and watery in between. What am I doing wrong? Btw, it is a 6.5L Rival one. All advice gratefully received.

This might sound a silly question, but where did you put the ingredients? When I made porridge for the first time a few weeks ago, I put the ingredients in a glass bowl and then filled the slow cooker 1/2 full with boiling water.
Otherwise, I don't know. Hope someone can help.

Hi Petunia - I just put them all in the slowcooker dish - should I have put them in a seperate bowl like you did?

Ah, I think so. I think the only reason why I did it that way was because I made lemon curd in my Mum's slow cooker years ago, and did the same thing. I kind of reasoned that both are the same sort of consistency. I think the only thing I found with the porridge I made, was that it was very thick, so had to mix in some milk the following morning. But it was wonderfully creamy!
You'll find a lot of puddings done in the slow cooker need to use a separate bowl and 1/2 full the pot bit with boiling water.

Thanks Petunia. Can I just ask - how much oats (Jumbo oats?) and how much milk/water did you use and for how many people?

I'll probably have to look it up because I've thrown away the oats packet. Think it was something like 1 cup oats to 1 1/2-2 cups milk or milk/water.

Hope you see this before you try again, but think those amounts were for just for me and 2DDs. I only tried it once (think I might try it again tonight!) but I think the amount of water just depends on how thick you like it. I might add a bit more water because the porridge was so thick last time!
