non wheat based dinners...

Just looking for ideas really.
No wheat allergy but kids have cereal for breakfast and a sandwich based lunch as our school dinners are SO vile.
So I don't then want to give them a wheat based dinner too often.

My only restrictions are ds wont eat eggs so frittata etc is out
and dd doesn't like mashed potato so Fish Pie etc no good
OR - the really limiting one - mince in a tomato sauce so chili, bolognaise and cottage pie out too.

any ideas would be gratefully received.

We had a chicken and rice stir fry tonight. We often have a roast dinner (twice a week) and have fish and chips weekly too. They eat tons of fruit and love tuna pasta and eat a LOT of veg with roasts. We have a plate of salad on the table each night which always gets eaten up. We tend to have fruit based puds (crumble, cake and fruit, fruit muffins, jelly and fruit). But I'd still like some more main course savoury ideas with no wheat?

Risotto? DS loves a chicken risotto, put with salad on the side. Salmon with new potatoes and some veg, a stew or cassarole served with veg. We served cowboy dinners... Chicken drumsticks, corn on the cob and beans.

Yes, Risotto a good idea - thanks, Cosysocks
Yes, we do have salmon and potatoes when funds allow too.
Could try drumsticks - mine not keen last time.

We sometimes have Toad in the hole, but again that's wheat, as is Pie in any form.

Risotto, pilau, baked pots and toppings, stir fry with rice noodles or noodle soup, tray bakes with sausage or chicken and chorizo with veg. Mine like a kind of thai style pork mince in little gem lettuce leaves or you could Mexican style in corn wraps / tacos.

Roasted veg...Mediterranean style --tomatoes, red onion, courgette, peppers with halloumi to go with meat or fish. Autumn style-shallot, sweet potato, large cherry tomatoes, tin of cannellini beans added for last 15 mins (mix in so they don't dry out).

A dhal made with lentils and coconut milk.

Cauliflower rice or mash.

Quinoa is a good replacement for cous cous/pasta type dishes. Google quinoa and feta fritters-yum. Also lentils? Either dahl with curry & rice or lentil bake type dish. Or not quite as healthy-sausage, wedges & beans!

Polenta is delicious and versatile. You can eat it like mash, as chips, make pizza base from it, little crunchy polenta tots...

Gluten free corn based pasta is really nice too.

soba noodles are wheatfree.
polenta
quinoa
pearled barley
use buckwheat or rice flour mixed with oats as a crumble topping

for school lunches can you get hold of corn tortillas (made with maize not wheat) and use as wraps?

Try the Wheat-Free website for more ideas. You are right there is so much refined wheat in out diets

Tacos
Nachos (not v healthy Grin)
Fry up (eggs, sausages, baked beans, with raw veg to snack on)
Veggies and dip with sweet potato wedges
Random other fish with rice and veg if salmon is too pricey

My husband does a mean line in random left over meat/fish stir fried with vegetables and rice and soy sauce. Grin
