Popcorn for children

I'm giving my children a movie night treat tomorrow...
Does anyone have any recipes for popcorn that don't involve salt or sugar for children? An alternative coating?

Honey?

Or is it sugar in all forms you're trying to avoid?

Cinnamon?

Can you not just give them normal popcorn? They're not going to keel over, notwithstanding any diabetes....

butter is another option

Cook in coconut oil (and add a teeny bit of salt). Tastes delicious.

what age are they? What is wrong with tasty sweet popcorn. I gather toffee popcorn is out of the question?

Cor, that was quick!

The are only 5 and 2. We don't have a TV at home (by choice) and so they are getting a rare treat and thought I would make it special. I think a lot of sugar or salt at their ages wouldn't be great??

Great suggestions, thank you

Smoked paprika, provided they don't go and put their paprika-covered fingers in their eyes.
Parmesan
Look at the salt info on salty popcorn though, it's very low.

I'd go with cinnamon and a tiny bit of icing sugar mixed together. Its delicious and not too sweet.

If its a rare treat I'd do microwave/pan popcorn as a bit won't harm them.

A LOT wouldn't be great. But a portion of popcorn is hardly a lot if all else is balanced.

We do movie night with my 2 (same age) occasionally and they love the excitement of microwave popcorn, hearing the pops and then cuddling up - it does feel a real treat.

Lots of butter and a little salt. You can see how much you're adding, it needed be loads.
Do they eat bread, cheeses, ham? There's much more salt in those than in a pinch of salt you add yourself.

Or would butter, a teeny bit of brown sugar and some cinammon taste nice? I'd mix it together and try it before I poured it on, in case not.

Great thank you! Little one is an eye rubber so I think paprika is out. Yes, butter and parmesan may be the way forward!!

It's true I suppose they would get more salt from cheese, although they don't each much at a time. I imagine they will hoover as much popcorn as humanly possible! Grin

Actually any recommendations for films?! Nothing Disney/princess based, trying to steer clear, Jungle book ok but they know it well. Is the Lego movie any good? My youngest is nearly 3.

Lego movie is too much for that age IMO. Mine like the Thomas Movies best.

Mine loved the Ice Age movies at that age. DS2 was Ice Age mad.

If you want a short movie I would recommend Lost and Found. And the ones based on the Julia Donaldson books.
