What DO truffles taste like?

I have just been watching a cooking show on TV. The Italian chefs were drooling over the scent of the truffles.

Give me a clue what they actually do smell of ? Please.

Sound not so good!

Why do all the foodies get so excited about them??

I will have to try some, and see for myself :)

I've no idea! I think it's because they're so expensive and rare.
It's like mushrooms but not as nice.

A strong aroma that's very unique. Try a truffle oil to get an idea. A little goes a long way. Great on eggs, pasta or drizzle over puréed cauliflower soup.

I like truffle oil but not truffles.
Oysters on the other hand are fab.

They smell intense in the same way that garlic does. But... Cheesy socks is about right.

I used to work in a posh deli and we hated getting the truffle box out- was kept in a fridge and you'd get a little one like a golf ball and that would be like £150 quid. And the smell was horrible and filled the shop and posh ppl would sniff appreciatively.

But I have never eaten one, maybe they taste wonderful!

They smell like a load of teenage boys in a changing room after a game of rugby and they taste like dirt

They were definitely a 1 time only thing

But I do like truffle oil

don't try a truffle oil to get an idea! Sorry, but truffle oils contain no truffle at all and are nasty smelly chemically derived oils that will only ruin anything you put them on.

A bit like very, very strong mushrooms.
