Best knives?

Hi, I need a recommendation for a decent set of kitchen knives. The ones I have are VERY old and blunt. I don't mind paying a bit extra for some good ones. Any recommendations ? Thanks!

I have Global knives and I LOVE them. They are expensive but you could easily get away with having just a big cook's knife or a medium one that will do pretty much everything except slice bread. They are very sharp, sharpen easily and well and they have a lovely balance in your hand when you use them.

Yaxell knives are beautiful - lovely to use and very good. I'm currently building (slowly) a collection of them. I also like Henckels and Wusthof if you prefer European style knives. Are you anywhere near a Steamer Trading Cookshop? They have lots of knives that you can try out, and sometimes have offers - I got a £35 discount on my last Yaxell Ran.

I'd recommend trying a cheap set of ceramic knives. I bought a couple from Aldi and I am really impressed.

Otherwise I just buy reasonable quality ones from somewhere like TK Maxx Homesense, and get the OH to sharpen them on his grinding stone when they need it.

Another vote for Global from me. You can often get a kind of starter set of three on decent offers in places like Steamer Trading.
