I have a thousand home-grown tomatoes...

and they just keep coming! Only chutney recipes I have are for green toms - any ideas what to do with the red ones?? Of course I've tried soup, pasta sauce etc... thought chutney would be good idea for Christmas??

I make loads (and I mean LOADS) of soup and pasta sauce to freeze.

Chutney would be a good idea - I don't know any recipes but have you tried Nigella - she's usually good for those type of recipes.

dunno about chutney, we just put them in the blender then boil them down and add herbs and garlic and freeze in bags for a constant supply of pasata for pasta and pizza all year round! I shall have to check back to see if someone leaves a chutney recipe though!

I have loads of tomatoes too! Chutney with ripe tomatoes is fine. It is what I am going to do with mine anyway!

Thank you! Didn't know you could make it woth red ones? ( don't know if I thought they'd explode or something, sounds pretty stupid now!) Another thing? Do you take the skins off as you should? Mum says no, dh says yes...

slow oven roast (like sun dried but I assume you live in the UK??) then they'll keep in oil for a few weeks

I didn't take them off when I made gree tomato chutney last week. The recipe didn't say to. Had a bit of sneeky taste and seemed OK

My recipe says yes, you take the skins off, which is a bit of a nuisance for me as my tomatoes are all little cherry type ones.

Also - I've thrown away all my useful sized jars for chutney (durr) - anywhere you can get cheapish ones? Like the idea for the slow roast...

Thanks. Little toms a bum to peel but worth it when they pop out - very satisfactory - if I can ignore pleading of ds1 and 2 for attention...

our Mancunian summer having ended in July, I'm now stuck with thousands of green tomatoes!

Does anyone have the definitive, perfect, idiot-proof recipe for chutney that their granny has used since 1910?

btw Ikea sell those Kilner type jars for 99p - here just need to fill them now!

I've just done a jar of pickled green tomatoes .

At a local farmers market they have smoked cherry tomatoes in oil. I reckon if you know how to smoke stuff in a BBQ it would be worth giving this a go - they taste unbelievable. We've done lots of tomato sauce and I really fancy having a go at sun-drying (oven-drying) a few.

hugh fearnley whittingstall also has lovely recipe, he calls it glutney and you can use whatever glut of veg you have (i did green tom and courgette, one batch with chilli, the other without)

green tomato pickle
2lb green toms
1lb onion
4 oz sugar
1/2 pint of vinegar
pinch of salt
slice toms and onions
put in pan with the vinegar & salt
cook until they go soft and chutney like (45 ish mins)


For jars I buy the cheap sauces 25-30p from Tesco and empty the jars!

(actually says it in my book!)

do you use ordinary brown malt vinegar? or is it something special?

I've bought the Ikea jars, cos I'm hoping to make up a hamper to give out to the rellies at >>Christmas.
