Not entirely sure I';d use the word "wholesome".

In fact, I'm not entirely sure what they do to the meat to make it corned beef. And I'm less sure I want to know...

That's why I am asking.

Yes spring onions are good.
Best slightly cooked in stir fry is my feeling.

We had corned beef hash on holiday whilst camping; it was absolutely divine, but I have a feeling it would only be divine if you were camping IYKWIM.

Yum, love in in a hash, with pureed veg so DD doesnt reconise them. She loves the stuff and would probably eat it cold, but i could'nt bear to watch, for me it has to be cooked!

I love it in corned beef hash but not in anything else. It's great comfort food. I was surprised how expensive it was compared to other processed tinned stuff in Tesco.

Thanks Iota, that is interesting.Y'know it seem no more spooky than I thought (hoped) it would (or rather wouldn't) be.

I wouldn't feed it to my dog, if I had one.

Gross.

My nan used to serve it with sliced beetrrot, cucumber so cold it glistened with condensation, cream cheese triangle, pickled onions, tin of sardines, bread with thick yellow butter.

Poor / war food.

I tend to think it's quite spectacularly repulsive. And probably made of, you know, bits.

Report
Thomcat · 24/08/2006 16:43

Mind you nanny Thomcat did also let us eat dollops of condensed milk straight fromt he tin so it wasn't all bad.

I love corned beef but rarely buy it. Always wanted to make corned beef hash but just know that hot corned beef won't work.

I live in a road that locals used to call "corned beef alley" because it was where the richer people lived during the war and they mysteriously never got bombed. Anyway,,,, I digress...

Corned, what does that mean? What is corned beef.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Report
moondog · 24/08/2006 16:45

Why this moniker though KBear?

I love the expression 'corn beef legs'

I mean all that Yiddisher wholesome stuff is US salt beef, not the stuff in oblong cans. Surely nothing wholesome can come out of oblong cans.

Corned is just referring to the salted aspect of it (corns meant grains,as in salt)

I often have corned beef legs. It's a fetching look.

I think "corned beef alley" because corned beef was expensive during the war. Dunno really.
