My dd(7m) has been taking puree since 5m. She still gags on puree and i have to water all food down. She is not fussy and takes most savory and sweet food. She drinks lots of water with meal but still gags. Unfortunatly when she gags she is nearly always spectacularly sick! Help its so frustrating some meals have to be attempted 3 times! She is gaining weight and the HV says as she gets older this will stop. Any tips? She was a very sicky breast fed baby.

Could it be reflux ?

My DS2 would gag on his puree/solids and used to be sick quite alot, although he was never a sicky baby when only milk fed. Refused a lot of foods though, unlike yours it sounds .

We didn't relaise what was wrong with him until we were referred to paed dietian.

does your dd arch her back at all when being fed, if so then it may be reflux.

She does sometimes arch her back and doesn't seem that bothered with food. She never cries for food just milk. What did the dietician recommend?

By the time we saw the dietain DS was 13 months, he didn't chew very well and stated that he need the confidence to chew. So she recommended foods that would disolve in his mouth like plain puffed wheat, and ( sorry food police) Quavers !!

she said that he would grow out of it and we were offered the scope to have a look down his stomach and if it contoued then the possibilty of drugs.

Within a month of seeing her he had virtually stopped overnight being sick, as he was walking upright 99 % of the time.

OIt may be differnet with a child your age , it is certain;y worth speaking to your HV and asking for a referral.

when I gave the dietain the case history and mentioned arched back , straight away she said it was reflux , classic sign apparently.

have you tried the usual Gavison etc . I found this difficult to use especailly when trying to introduce solids.

must admit DS loved his milk aswell.

Worth getting it seen to ASAp, DS problems started around 5 months and it caused alot of stress for us him being sick at the worst after every meal and the cleaning up and the refusal to eat. He maintaned his weight OK but was only only just on 25 centile .

Came very close to depression with it all.

tbh dd only improved when she was walking. It actually got worse around the 5/6 months mark as she became more mobile and wanted to spend more time on the floor. tbh drinking as lot of water may not be helping as the food becomes more fluid and therefore even less likely to stay down.

If it is reflux it is to do with an immature stomach valve which will develop with age as your hv says. In the meantime avoid lumps and go for stodgier foods such as potato as the base for her meals.

Ds could always cope with pasta and he also liked custard and yoghurts which kept his calories upe
