New look food and recipes section - win free fruit & veg for a year!

We know how much you lot love your food: over the years you have posted nigh-on 3000 recipes to the site, covering everything from baby food to lemon drizzle cake, and all the roast dinners, picnic foods and puddings in between. In honour of your input, we've been thinking for some time now that our food section was ripe for a bit of a do-over - so we've spent the last few months doing just that: garnishing each recipe with a mouth-watering photo, beefing up the search engine, and whipping together some of our very favourite recipes into handy collections for you to drool over browse.

The idea was to make it easier for you to find the recipes you're after, and simpler to add your own. There's also a lot of useful info in there (from what to do when your child announces they've become a vegetarian to ideas for using up leftovers, packed lunch dos and don'ts and how to cater a children's party) which wasn't too easy to track down in days gone by; it's now gathered in one place, ready for when you need it.

And we're not stopping there: still to come is a new mealplanner tool and a dish-of-the-day recommendation. The recipe folders will be back better than ever, and there's even a Mumsnet cookbook in the pipeline (thanks again to all of you who helped with recipe testing!). Rather than waiting for everything to be ready, though, we wanted to give you a look at what's there now, and ask for your thoughts. Do you like the new look? Is the search working for you? And is there anything crucial that's missing?

Of course, all the shiny new features are as nothing without your recipes; your works-every-time cake, your pleases-any-fussy-child dish or your looks-like-I've-made-a-huge-effort-when-it-only-took-minutes dinner party staple. So we're marking the relaunch with a new competition: share your recipes with other Mumsnetters over the next month by adding them here and you'll be entered into a competition to win a year's weekly delivery of fruit and veg boxes from Riverford. Good luck, and do let us know what you think of the revamp!

Erm... One of my recipes is on there posted in an old name, yet my current name is also shown which I'd rather it didn't...

That aside, it looks great.

you need to VEG up your search engine! I'm getting some very meaty recipes when I look for veggie ones!

Katn · 27/11/2013 16:51

ooh... going to go have a nose round!

CatherineHMumsnet · 27/11/2013 17:01

Hi Shallishanti - we're not seeing the same thing. Can you tell us what you're searching for and how and we'll look into it.

When I go to the 'Add a recipe' screen, there's a 'DO NOT MIGRATE' button at the top - I'm guessing it's not meant to be there? Am using Firefox if it's relevant.

advanced search>vegetarian>main course>find recipes......comes up with spaghettiwith bacon, gammon, chicken, lamb.....

I agree with Shallishanti, I use the recipie section a lot, but get a lot of meat recipies when I specify Vegetarian. (I keep thinking your like my late FIL who, without fail, offered me a ham sandwich every time I visited)

hmmm, just looked up traybakes, as when people ask about school fates etc, I link to MmeLindor's ones.
Her two tray bakes come up with an error message.
The chocolate tray bake seems to contain a tin of tomatoes. Really??

Have you proofed this, Mumsnet?

Next phase, that's what they're getting us to do!

Mmmm.

Spent 20 mins trying to put a recipe in. It's a pita having to add each ingredient separately as I normally c&p off a word document.

Anyway, it won't let me add it. No idea why. Message at ottom says picture must be at least 650 pixels wide. Does this mean mine is wrong size? It won't let me delete it so I've wasted my time.

And I also have the "do not migrate" button. Am too scared to press it.

Report
LowLevelWhinging · 27/11/2013 20:21

can someone proof read the low carb recipes please?

I'd love to be able to search for low carb ideas, but the first recipe up when I search 'low carb' and 'lunch box' is cheese biscuits made with flour

I know there's lots of definitions of low carb, but it would be good if our definition fitted in to BIWI's bootcamp rules.

BUT, it does look like it's going to be good Smile

Can you include a way to save recipes? There are so many. It would be useful to have a 'my saved recipes' facility so you can find stuff again

Great idea, will def use this once it's up and running properly. Search doesn't seem to be working - results seem to just be based on one selected field. I tried to find dairy and egg-free main meals with fish as ingredient but results included egg fried rice and fish dish with cucumber sauce made with yoghurt.

nextphase - we have proofed almost 3000 recipes over the past few months but obviously some things slip through (reckon that was supposed to related to the tin it's baked in). But thanks for pointing it out. Have changed it now and we'll alert Tech to the missing Mmelindor recipes.

Please don't press the 'do not migrate' button or the recipe will disappear. (one more for Tech)

On veggie recipe issues - do please report any recipes that pop up in a search and we'll make sure that doesn't happen again.

LowLevelWhiting - will sort out that cheese biscuit recipe (wouldn't it be nice if it was low-carb?)

VivaLaBeaver - what a pain for you. Do you want to PM me the recipe and I'll put it in for you? But we'll also try and work out why it happened too.

Me2Me2 - yes a working new-look recipe folder is something we're building right now. Will be up in phase 2 which hopefully isn't that far away.

Auntierosemary - does seem as if search is a bit buggy. We'll try that same search and see if some recipes were classified as egg-free when they should in fact have been classed as an egg recipe.

I'm getting a 'do not migrate' button (I've not pressed it, promise)

I like it general logo though,, it's a lot cleaner and morose modern than the previous one which was very basic and seemed somewhat of an after thought if I'm honest.

I agree with the poster that said about having out own recipe folder to save into, there are a few things I'd like too make and that would make my life easier.

I'll have a go at adding some things in tomorrow if I can get baking and taking pictures.

It's a vast improvement. Smile

It looks great when added however it takes ages to do and as before mentioned I would normally copy and paste from my recipe file so this was more work than before which I don't have time to do. I am impressed with how it looks though and wish I had a picture to add. I wrote up this one if anyone is interested, www.mumsnet.com/food/recipe/2626-Vegetable-strudel

I tried to add a recipe, but it just got stuck saying 'posting'. I refreshed the page and my list of ingredients disappeared (to be honest I was expecting it all to vanish!). I then tried to post it again admittedly only adding one ingredient back in and nothing happened that time.

Sorry, but this is awful! I don't know whether it's because I'm on a mobile, but it is impossibly slow. Teething problem? I'm using the mobile site, not the app, via Safari.

I could not input a recipe.

I like the idea of getting all recipes into the same format. Will revisit later, and try again.

I agree, it does look like it will be great but the search isn't working.
Low carb mains brings up lots of pasta dishes :(
