You know those onions they bring with the poppadoms at an Indian restaurant?

How can I make them at home? I have tried just chopping onions but they don't taste the same. What do they have on them? Salt? I am craving them... Help!

Sliced onions, tsp chilli, 1/2tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 2tsp vinegar, 1/2tsp salt, 1tsp sugar, water to cover
Leave for 20 mins
Lush!
Can't guarantee same as your local, but works for me
Better if can get Spanish onions as milder

i make mine by finely slicing a large onion, a couple of cherry tomatoes, a small amount of cucumber, some corriander leaves, salt and a squeeze of lemon. Make it a couple of hours in advance as this is what softens the onions.

It's okay, Ambrosia. Ringing the local takeaway would obviously be the logical thing to do! But lots of theories here to try.

Is it just plain onions? Madhur Jaffrey says to slice thinly,place in cold water, add some ice cubes, refrigerate 2 hours.

White onions, you need to use white onions. You may have to go to an Asian grocers to get them, never seen them in a supermarket.

Its either whole onions pickled in vinegar and sliced up while serving; or sliced up onions marinated in fresh lemon juice for an hour or two, and salt added just before serving. Usually while onions, but red work equally well. Lemon juice makes them go red or pink - nothing to worry about.

Its vinegar. Look up "Kachumber" if you want exact recipes. Doesn't have to be with cucumber and tomato, its optional.
