HELP!! Why won't he eat?

My 17mth DS has been going through a very long phase of not eating anything I give him in the evenings apart from cheese, bananas and toast or spag bol.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to get him to eat a bit more. He doesnt eat a lot throughout the day either after his breakfast and if given half the chance I'm sure would just eat bread all day. Even if I give him sandwiches he just licks the filling and he smells his food at each mouthful so I can't get anything past him if he doesn't want it.

He also refuses to eat lumps so I'm still mashing everything and he feeds himself using hands not spoon, which I don't mind as at least it goes in that way rather than lobbed around the room off the spoon!

He is really active during the day and sleeps fine but it just seems to be a long running battle and I'm tired of it now :(

Any help or past experiences grateful and can someone please tell me it won't last for ever!

apparently most kids do it. its like a phase. if he knows it upsets you he may do it more.
he wont starve himself.

I hope so, it just seems to be going on for ages! I get days where I don't care and don't get upset with it and then I get the odd day where it just really f**ks me off and I have to go and bang a few pots in the kitchen to let the frustration out!

Lots of finger food and ignore him. He will eat when he is hungry, stop worrying cheese bananas toast and spag bol is not going to hurt him for a while. Try to introduce some more fruit, slices of apple ect and some veg, spears of brocolli, mange tout and french beans go down well with my dd. Relax if you make a fuss he will use it against you.

DS lived on air from 9m to 35m and then suddenly, he is eating everything and all the time. It may be a phase, but if you are really concerned what at the end woked for us was not to offer alternatives and not allowing him to leave the table unless he had had at least two spoonfuls of his food (enough to start him eating). Dietitian also suggested to cut snacks to insure he will eat the proper meals whic should contain proteins, carbs and 2-3 vegetables at lunch and dinner and fruit and cereal for breakfast.

Thanks everyone. Its reassuring to know DS is not the only child to do this. I caved in tonight though and gave him mulagatawny soup from covent garden co and he wolfed it down, so must be something to do with my cooking!!

I've tried to give him finger foods such as veg but he just slings it across the room and he's gone off most fruit, but he ate half an apple tonight which he hasn't done for a while.

I do wonder if he's got problems with his tummy as his stools are horrendous at the moment, they've gone from being hard to exploding up his back, sorry if tmi, and they smell ferocious!

Anyway thanks again, and I'll persist at being calm and not letting it get to me.
