Brought a reduced chicken from co-op today.

Just checked it as i put it in the oven and the sell by date was yesterday.

Will it be ok still ??

Can you take it back? They shouldn't sell you out of date food. They might give you a nice well within date chicken instead!

Otherwise, open the packet and smell it. If it smells OK, just cook it for a bit longer than you normally would and I am sure you will be fine. But tkae it back if you can and complain that you were sold an out of date chicken. I have done so in the past and they should swap you a good one no questions asked.

I would take it back. they shouldnt be selling out of date food. Its Ok if the eat by date is today, not if it was yesterday.

Haven't got reciept so can't take it back.

It smelt ok i think and, it was the sell by date that was yesterday.

Won't enjoy it now mind you.

sell by date or best before/use by date? If its the latter, they can still sell it.

I take it is the oven now then?

I would still take it back without the receipt. If you go in confidently, they don't usually argue against you.

Yep it's in the oven now, in foil though.

Dp said he's not taking it back.

I got all confused with my last post, you know what I mean anyway.

If it smells OK, its probably OK.

If it smells OK, IMO it will be fine. It didn't spontaneously become indedible at midnight last night, enjoy it, it's fine. Wish we were having a roast!

Have you got something else to eat instead? If I was in doubt as you appear to be, and I had something else I could eat instead, I might just chuck the chicken. What did it cost? £2? £3? Is it really worth the worry?

Am searching for replacement now.

Does mince, tinned toms, baked beans with a chilli con carne mix sounds any good, plus mash ?

LOL at what my life has become, scrounging round cupboards for food.

Slight hijack - sorry

I have a chicken breast fillet left in a packet I opened on Friday - would that be ok do you think to cook today?

I am always really anal about handling poultry properly, cooking it thoroughly and respecting use by dates. I wouldn't risk it - simply because of the amount of salmonella and other bugs going through the poultry business, dangers of cross-contamination are rife. Just not worth it, even for a cheap meal
