Recipe of the week

smithy's roasted beetroot: low-fat, dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free and generally nutritious and virtuous. This one-dish wonder is delicious and uses up some seasonal beets. What's not to like?

Very simple, pic on my profile. If you need any advice just ask!!!

Big tip tho is push barbie in quite deep, and make sure she is very clean! or wrap her in cling to be doubly sure!!!
I have seen a kit in hobbycraft I think.
I have got the bell shaped tin
Got barbie or Ariel(from toybox)
Worried about making the cake
I dont have any weighing scales which could pose a problem. Is it possible to be very lazy and use cake mix? lol
gloomgirl-I cant see your profile

I would buy/make a cake and ice it plain then buy one of these edible cake topper things off ebay and slap it on the top!!
Here is link to search for barbie cake topper on ebay There is also a little set you can arrange on the top of a cake looks cute!
Good luck

I did one for DD's 4th birthday, and am supposed to be doing one again for her 7th next week!! I seem to remember that you need a lot of cake mix to fill the bowl/tin. We have a Barbie with the legs ripped off for this purpose!

ok so step by step.

I made 3 cakes 2 same size one slightly smaller.
I stacked them and carved them into a dome shape.
I stacked them again but with butter ice in between.
I then jam and cream them and put on the icing to make the fluted shpes of the dress, basically big slug shapes at the base of the cake, then I cover the cake properly with icing.
I use the regal ice stuff from the super market and colour it myself.
The trick is to knead the icing really really well so it gets good and pliable, and ice it on reasonably thick-this will avoid cracking.
Then I pushed barbie down into the middle of the cake.
Now I make a little bodice of icing for barbie, some gloves too, straps to cover her shoulder joints.
I cut out heart (but stars or flower shapes could work) and place around top of dress and then put a belt around her middle again to hide any joints.
then decorate with sparkles and so on.

hope this helps!

Wow gloomgirl - that looks fab!!

Mine was less complex - I just wrapped ribbon round the Barbie's body, and then layered ready to roll icing over the cake part, and stuck on flowers. Get the ready coloured icing as if you want to do a vibrant colour with food colouring, you have to add so much that it tastes disgusting!!

After nearly 7 years, I have now come to the conclusion that (a) icing hides a multitude of sins, and (b) kids think that whatever you produce is fantastic!
Thankyou

Where would i buy the ready coloured icing?

pelvic - i have a vague recoolection you are local and i gave you some noddy toys once...

anyhow if you are, there is a cake decorating shop in kingswinford that sells ready coloured icing and edible gliter and all manner of wonderful things to stick on the cake. they also sell bags of cake mix too, in every flavour you can imagine grin
ah Jackie yes i remembersmileYou were BG then i think. Will bear that in mind if the snow stays away.If not i shall be hunting around town.
I was thinking of icing love hearts along the cake board and then putting little iced flowers (if i can get)on the dress.

I have done this a couple of times, and it always looks fab. If you are really pressed for time, you can have Barbie in a real bodice, and just ice the skirt.

Crikey. I do know you'd have to balance its ridiculous tits on legs so spindly that if she were real her ankles would break. Not sure you can render that in cake.
Wilfsell-I shall of course be fashioning some marzipan swollen fat ankles under the dressgrin

I have added Dr Oetker ready coloured icing plus some white to my Ocado order - I think you can get it in most supermarkets - red, black, yellow & green I think, but you can mix them.

If Ocado can't get here through the snow, I am buggered.

At the risk of being too commercial, we manufacture a cake pan/tin that is sold by some shops/internet traders as a Barbie Cake Tin, other people sell it as a "Silverwood Tiffin Pan" (it can also be used as a rugby ball cake pan, or more correctly, half a rugby ball). It is the right depth to be able to take Barbie's ridiculously incredibly long legs!
Bramshott -Thanks never thought of Ocado

Silverwoodhelpdesk-That is the tin i have bought

Thank you, Pelvicfloor!

Just remember to take the legs off the barbie before poking her into the sponge, My friend forgot this and it was amputation at cake slicing time - all the DC were horrified grin
