Getting tank ready for new fish

We have a 60l tank that for the last 4.5 years had a goldfish in it (well, periodically other fish too, but they all 'disappeared' so Jaws was on his own most of the time).

Jaws died on Wednesday - white bloom round gills, 24 hours later dead.

I have emptied the tank, scrubbed off the algae from the bits that were impossible to reach with water in, scrubbed the rocks and plastic plants under running water and changed the filter sponge for a new one.

I have put all the gravel back and filled with water. Added some water conditioner (used for water changes).

What do I need to do to make it ready for new fish. Def not getting a goldfish now I know that the tank is too small - hoping for a small shoal.

Sorry for the essay. All advice gratefully received.

You'll neex to do a fishless cycle. sorry, am on my phone so I can't link but I have linked to a good article on lots of other fish net threads if you have a look. I'd replace the filter sponges first. if you want to keep it as a coldwater tank then white cloud mountain minnows are a good choice, yould coild keep 6-8 in yhere.
