New tank owner... Getting water right

Ds as a reward for hard work got the fish tank he's wanted for some time.

We have been running it now for 4 weeks, filter going, anti chlorine stuff and placing some balls for bacteria in it... ( sorry I haven't a clue about this).

Every time we go to the shop for the water to be checked to see if it right for fish, it's not....even though they said would take a week.. Now say more like 3 months.

Are we doing things correctly, should we be Using special water rather than using tap?

Well done for doing a fishless cycle, it'll save you a lot of hassle in the long run. It's completely normal for a tank not to be cycled in 4 weeks. It can take 4-6 weeks and definitely not a week.

A few questions-

How big is the tank and what are you planning to put in it?
What are the balls for bacteria you've been putting in?
Have you been adding a source of ammonia (either fish food or household ammonia)?

This is a really good guide to fishless cycling.
