I've just watched this film and how utterly lovely it is!

Has anyone else seen it?

I'm going to have to have a google about PL Travers and if she actually was as difficult as they portray...

The little girl who played Ginty was outstanding...

I want to watch it this weekend as it's just come on Sky.

Glad you say it's good, I'll look forward to it!

I watched it last night and loved it. I was LOL at some of it, and on the whole found it very moving.

Such a lovely film Smile

Dh and I saw it at the cinema when it was out and watched it again on sky recently with our 11 and 13 year old dds. They really enjoyed it too.

Amazing that such a well known film nearly wasn't made!

I love the bit during the credits when you hear the actual recordings of a script meeting... She really hated it!!

I loved it. Researching it afterwards saddened me.

Why? About PL Travers early life, or something not in the film?

I also loved it and was saddened by her story - particular by her adopted son saying 'she died unloved and loving no one'

I think that's a very sad statement

I thought Emma Thompson was amazing - she might be the best actress in the world. I'm utterly riveted to her on screen.

She pretty much always hated Disney, despite them seemingly have made amends in the film - that's why there are no sequels. It affected the rights to the stage production, and there are ridiculous clauses that mean no Americans be involved in anything to do with Mary Poppins.

After the original film she became a recluse. Nobody loving her, and loving nobody. Whilst the film shows us why she was like that, it's not something she EVER got over.

I watched it on Monday & loved it too Op. Great movie & the voice recordings at the end were just lovely.

Makes Mary Poppins even more magical to think she was based on a real person Smile

Off to google PL Travers as didn't know anything at all prior to this movie.

Was the stuff with her driver true? That was very touching (although can imagine that was a movie addition!)

I love the film but I'm not sure it tells the whole story, not that they ever do. Victoria Coren did a culture show special on PL Travers when the film came out and she indicated she wasn't a terribly nice woman or mother. Still love the film!

I thought it was fantastic - funny and sad and a great insight into a much-loved film. ET was amazing.

Just read Wikipedia & the comment from her grandchildren is very telling - sounds like the movie was very much sugar-coated (still love it though!).

I wonder about her siblings - there were quite a few of them but not mention of them at all.

Are you sure about that? I thought the Sherman brothers had something to do with new music for the Mary Poppins musical in London a few years ago? (I could be wrong!)

Who was Mary P based on? The sister? I get who Mr Banks was

I don't think it reveals any spoilers to say I saw it at the cinema 37 weeks pregnant & I cried & cried & cried. The whole way through. Not snivelling, I mean sobbing...I actually moved seat to allow the woman next to me to enjoy the film in peace! All I can say in my defence is I love Mary Poppins, it's my favourite film, I was missing my Dad like crazy & I was v v pregnant!
