I saw this last night and I feel that my face has been melted off - anybody else seen it yet?

I saw it last week and thought it was great, inspite of the overt sexism, which prevailed throughout. The cinema was packed and people were laughing out loud throughout the film. I was tempted to see it again.

Your face melted off - does that mean you found it boring? I saw it last night and thought it was great. Very long, but very entertaining. Not for the easily offended - lots of sex, drugs, swearing and irreverent humour but I laughed loads.

Oops, started another thread by mistake because I started at 9am this morning g and just went back to it without seeing this one.

DH and I went to a 12.40pm show and I didn't check how long it is. We had to leave at 3.40pm to pick up DD from school. So my views may be spoiled by not seeing the end. Anyway, we really enjoyed it and laughed out loud a lot of times BUT it is tooooo long and started to get repetitive. There is a definite flavour of Goodfellas and it is quite outrageous but good fun. I didn't feel it made a big impression, I wasn't thinking about it later on or chatting about it with DH.

Went recently to see this ...thought it was good but very long.
One of those films that make an impression later

Good film but could have been cut by about half. It really didn't need to be as long as it was, a lot of it was the same thing happening over and over again, just on a slightly larger scale. I guess the fact that it's based on a true story explains why they chose to keep so much in, but IMO it wasn't necessary.

I enjoyed it a lot! And tbh I don't think it wore its 3 hr running time too heavily. At one point I did look at my watch and think "Christ, it's not even half way through," but the second half got very exciting. A cracking performance from wee Leo - what an interesting actor he's become.

Of course it was pretty grotty at points but I guess that was the intention - to show how outrageously excessive this guy really was. My DH works in stocks and said he might send some of the cockier trainees to see it as a learning experience - how NOT to go about your finance career. Grin

Some film critics say it is an hour too long and I don't think I want to see it.

There are people who really really behave very badly in the real world of finance and I don't want to see it shown as entertainment.

It is very much a cautionary tale More - there's no doubt you're meant to be disgusted by the guy. Smile

...and yet at the same time he made a million dollars on the movie rights (plus a fair bit more in boosted sales for his book, I imagine).

My face melted off from the sheer aggression! I really enjoyed it anc thought the performances were good all round. Tonight I watched 12 Years a Slave and was struck by the contrast between the two movies - one man completely living for himself through excess and another who loses everything and is stripped down for survival.
Really makes Jordan Belfort look even worse!

I liked the music track, mostly British and Euro music which was fresh and unusual. Also surprised to see Joanna Lumley! I enjoyed what I saw but it was WAY too long and ultimately inconsequential imo

I was hugely disappointed. I thought it was crude, superficial, mostly pretty brainless, over-the-top, devoid of subtlety - and I would have expected better from Scorsese.

I'd prefer "American Hustle" any day of the week.

He is still paying back money though isn't he?

I liked it but didn't think it was up to Scorsese's usual standards and it was too long. I felt the sweating and sex was over hyped tbh. Watching it it didn't seem that bad. Agree about the sexism though.

12 years is in a different league. Beautifully shot. That didn't feel long at all, booked to see that again tomo, this time with Dh.

I loved it- but i had to put my feminist brain on holiday in order to love it. I really did come away completely disgusted with what did and does go on in that world and i'm completely baffled by the fact that one body is capable of processing so much cocaine and alcohol and not just explode! How that man doesnt have permanent damage to his body and brain is beyond me.

I saw it last night and thought it was shite. 3 hours of watching strippers, drugs and drinking.

I laughed a couple of times but when it finished me and the friend I was with just thought what have we sat through.

I couldn't tell you a thing about it now.

Wikipedia says "According to federal prosecutors, Belfort has failed to live up to the restitution requirement of his 2003 sentencing agreement. The agreement requires him to pay 50% of his income towards restitution to the 1,513 clients he defrauded. Of the $11.6 million that has been recovered by Belfort's victims, $10.4 million of the total is the result of the sale of forfeited properties. The sentencing agreement mandates a total of $110 million in restitution.

In October 2013, federal prosecutors filed a complaint that Belfort, who had income of $1,767,209 from the publication of his two books and the sale of the movie rights, plus an additional $24,000 from motivational speaking since 2007, paid restitution of only $243,000 over the past four years. The government is currently not holding Belfort in default of his payments in order to keep negotiations open, but it is unclear when the full amount of the mandated restitution will be repaid."

No surprise there. Hes a vile person. He's money hungry and always will be. He'll always try and hold onto as much as he can.

Just seen it, as it's only just out in my neck of the woods... I loved it too. Belfort is the charismatic anti-hero played brilliantly by Leonardo di Caprio - I came out feeling v sorry for him (Leo, not Jordan Belfort!) as that amazing performance will no doubt miss out on an Oscar with the stiff competition from 12 Years a Slave...

I agree with Davros, it plays very much like Goodfellas, where you know how you should abhor the awful behaviour of the protagonists yet they are so gloriously and unashamedly amoral you find yourself, if not rooting for them, then at least being very entertained by them. (Hope I'm not alone in that?)

I'm not sure it was successful as a cautionary tale... how about that last shot of the FBI agent on the subway train - a Pyrrhic victory? But some of the sexism did grate, particularly that very uncomfortable scene at the beginning where the woman 'agrees' to have her head shaved for $10,000.
Anyway, a film worth discussing, and would happily see it again.

Hard to comment on this movie.. it repelled me on the one hand but I accept that it's probably what things were like then. You come away disliking most of the characters. I definitely think half of the naked scenes could've been cut with no effect on the message.

Some great acting though, from di Caprio himself but also Jonah Hill, Matt McConaughey, the French/Belgian guy, Margot Robbie, the dad, not to mention some nice little appearances from others like Joanna Lumley and Spike Jonze.

Was at least an hour too long. It's basically a series of set pieces all of which go on too long. Very boring.

I read the book for a book club a few months back. If I had known that I was buying this book to pay off his debt of defrauding people I would not have bought it.

Hence, I have not, and will never go see his movie. He can fuck off!

Possibly a little too long. Some really good (improvisation?) acting.
Probably too many shots of Leo's bare bottom Grin

I thought it was dire. Too long by 2 hours 45 minutes.

The acting was good but that didn't make up for it being bollocks.

Just seen this on a plane.

Yes, it was long, I'd seen enough thrusting hips and waxed buttocks by about 2/3 way through.

Near the end where Matthew McConaughy is on the tube he looks round the rest of the passengers, ordinary people. Maybe that was to make the point that that's where all their money was coming from, ordinary Americans trying to increase their savings. Horrendous really, how many people did they bankrupt whilst making their millions?
Otherwise the punters didn't get a single mention.
