I saw it today in 3D. And it was very watchable , I really loved it and was left still wondering who Gatsby actually was .

Viva - ignore the reviews. I am horribly fussy (and don't rate the book) but really enjoyed it. It's about half an hour too long and a few bits of silliness, but v easy on the eye. :)

I'm going tomorrow - with a bunch of 18 year olds. My lovely a level lit class wanted me to watch it with them. I'm really flattered but I will feel like their mum sitting by them in the cinema!

Sassy - dd1 did it for A level and loves the book, but hated the film.

I ended up loving it but took some getting used to. The way,it's filmed is strange and,so are some of the things that happened.

I kind of liked it...it was a visual feat and very Baz Luhrman but it lacked an authenticity. Needed more Jazz and less silly references to modern rap music. I thought Leo made a wondreful Gatsby, Carrie was a great Daisy and nick Carraway was good. I think it was a bit cartoon-like but fun.

Saw it yesterday and really liked it- as did DH who isn't normally into that kind of thing. Very watchable and entertaining and Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent, as was Carey Mulligan (sp?) who I really liked as Daisy, she was vulnerable and sweet and a but dislikable all in equal measure. Also I never had any time for Leo as a heartthrob when he was younger but he has got seriously hot

I'm almost scared to see it, but I know I must.

I love the book and also the film version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I especially like the era and the music. When I knew there would be a new film I thought how fantastic it was that Leonardo DC would be Gatsby. All good....

Then oh dear... it's Baz Luhrmann and my heart sank. I know how much he's rated but I absolutely hated Moulin Rouge and was so disappointed in it.

I'm worried Gatsby will be ruined by him getting all over 'creative' and putting his own elephant sized stamp all over it with the wrong soundtrack. Some of the music I've heard to go with the film whilst sounding great in it's own right seems so wrong for Gatsby.

I'm prepared to eat my popcorn on this and hope I'm wrong.

Saw it this evening. Very watchable. A lot of special effects which I expected from a BL directed film. Leo was excellent as Gatsby.
Overall it left me a bit cold.

I actually liked it

Taken on it's own I found it really enjoyable and I thought Leo was great in it. I find that movies are never as good as books so I try to look at them and enjoy them separately otherwise I would be constantly disappointed

It was too long though, the end did seem to drag

I loved the music in it too

The Great Gatsby is definitely better as a book than a film. It's the way it's written that makes is just "so". I do remember reading the book a first and second time and thinking "is that it?" But it is much more than just a "sad story", there is a deep cautionary tale amongst the frivolity and vanity of the characters and setting.

The film does not capture the wonderful quotes from the book and to me, it interprets it in a different way, not always good. Overall it stuck closely to the plot but I found Baz Lurhman's direction of it too "Baz Lurhman" iyswim. Very camp, flamboyant and blingy.

I thought that Carey Mulligan portrayed Daisy very well, innocent but foolish and selfish. Toby Maguire was also very good as Nick Carraway, he seems to be very good at portraying naive but generally good and loyal type. I thought Leo Decaprio over acted at times especially when Gatsby was first introduced but I guess that was his intention? He and Toby had good chemistry as Nick and Gatsby respectively but I read that they're also good friends in real life which helps.

I liked the film but I liked the book better. I was worried because of the bad reviews, but both dh and I enjoyed it. A fun night out.

Maybe I might like the film then as I thought the book was way overrated.
