Watching Dangerous Liaisons - so horrible!

It was on my list of 'classic films I can't believe I haven't seen yet' and it arrived through LoveFilm. It's just so VILE! I have counted one rape scene, several sexual assaults and one physical assault so far. John Malkovich's character seems like a sociopath. The performances are great and it looks beautiful but it's a pretty rough watch.

Just felt like sharing Smile

That makes me kind of sad. First of all, I love the movie. Second, a lot of good movies have something close to rape - and certainly tons of films have murders, as well as all kinds of other disasters. I'm guessing that at least 40% of all adult dramatic films since 1970 have some kind of violence. And when you get adult dramas without violence, audiences don't go to see them much.

I take your point MsAmerica and there is a lot to appreciate about the film. But I hadn't got to the ending when I wrote the original post! Ugh - nice example of a woman being given the blame for absolutely everything. And the Uma Thurman character was raped by John Malkovich's character but then was portrayed enjoying it and getting kind of hooked on the relationship. And I couldn't understand how Michelle Pfeiffer's character became so overcome with lust for a creepy guy who was stalking her around the flower gardens! I just found it horribly unpleasant and I am not the sort of person who will only watch hearts and flowers and fluffy kittens stuff.

the story line read too much like my last marriage and in part the first one as well, too close for comfort, i feel very uneasy about watching that for so called entertainment, but if other people want to watch then that's fine by me.

I think it's about many of the women being so repressed and given so few choices that they embrace the sexual attention and freedom. Isn't the Michelle Pfieffer character really lonely? It's also about the lack of power women have and Glenn Close wants power so she uses the only weapon she has - creating dangerous liaisons and spreading gossip.
None of the women do well out of it because they are positioned in a way that they are unable to do so.
I think it's a brilliant film - well played by all

The rape etc is horrible but the point is that Uma Thurman's character is naive and stupid. Which he knows and exploits.

This is one oft favourite films! The music, setting and costumes are beautiful. The endings make me cry when JM and MP both die.....they were madly in love and both died because of it. I used to listen to the soundtrack non stop....
