have read, hope to make it.

I'll be there. Half way through the book and finding parts of it quite disturbing.

Rachyrachrach Wed 13-Oct-10 20:04:21

What's November's book or has that not been decided yet?

Hi everyone.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns Wed 27-Oct-10 21:01:49

Did everyone find it a shocking book? Or is that a stupid question?!

I plan to waffle on vaguely by myself until someone else appears....!

What stood out for me were:
1. the descriptions of gonzo porn - hadn't known it had got that bad
2. the account of these magazines grew - seeing them as big business was interesting
3. the section on racism made me blink - I vaguely knew those were the categories but I never quite engaged my brain before about what the implication of this was.

What it left me wondering was how much of the porn people are looking at is this kind of thing and how much is, I don't know, more benign? <hopes against hope>

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns Wed 27-Oct-10 21:08:43

yes it was hard to read. It left you not quite sure whether you were glad you'd read it or not - as in, I wish I hadn't read that but I'm glad I know it's happening.

I really really want to know now, when someone says their dp is watching porn or whatever, WHAT ARE THEY WATCHING? ie are they watching happy people shagging or are they watching, basically, a woman being tortured?

I found 'PCP' (pseudo-child porn) a really useful term; being able to label this group of images will make it easier to explain to people why they are wrong.

and yes, enormously shocking when you think about it. I had this at the back of my mind the other day when I made a complaint to the BBC about the image of sexy schoolgirl legs being used to illustrate a completely irrelevant feature on school term dates - it made me even more certain that the eroticising of schoolgirl images is wrong.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns Wed 27-Oct-10 21:16:10

I don't think it is strange how they run the business, and I don't think it is shocking necessarily; I felt it was significant because (for my generation at least) use of porn feels transgressive, it feels rebellious. And this emphasised the fact that it doesn't make you a rebel, it makes you one of a very large group of consumers.

that bit about the plastic dolls though - OMG! (lowers tone and goes off to look for link)

Oh no my book still hasn't arrived. sad

I will have to add to the thread when I finally get my copy and read it.

I have watched a video of Gail
Dines giving a presentation about porn so I might be able to add something now.

She is really funny in her speech and what came across was it's all about the money.

Publishers of porn mags linked with TV networks so the TV shows have a vested interest in "sexing up" pop stars etc. angry
Can't post the link now because I am in the bath on my iPod!

The blatant racism in porn is awful but it is not just in porn. In the presentation she shows adverbs and black women are often shown in animal prints and even next to wild animals and on safari FFS.
