Sorry if this is a well trod topic, but what would happen if I had a drink - not lots, but two, of pimms and lemonade with citalopram? Hangover? Meds not working? Want to know what would happen! Ta.

When I was taking citalopram I did drink sometimes and nothing happened. I think that if you drank a lot it wouldn't be great, but that's probablyt partly due to alcohol being a depressant.

I did find that when I started taking citalopram and also whenever I was increasing the dose that I didn't want to drink, but that was mainly due to the increased dose making me feel sick.

You can get hungover a lot more quickly depending on your personal reaction.

Have a small glass and see how it goes.

I can have a glass of wine or two and be fine but if I drink too much and am drunk rather than tipsy I get the worst hangovers and feel absolutely awful the day afterwards.

I think each person will react differently though so you probably need to have a little drink to start with and see how you are.

As others have said one or two drinks are generally ok but not more than that. Also just have a small one to start with as it may make you more drowsy than normal.

Now, I'm not suggesting for a minute you go out and get plastered, but I have to say that my own experience is that SSRIs (I've had citalopram and sertraline, over many years) and alcohol together don't cause any perceptible problems for me. I'm not sure whether there's a risk of problems I can't see - e.g., stress on liver though. But not in the habit of getting plastered since becoming a mum 2 years ago... don't have the inclination or the energy!

My friend who is on citalopram finds they don't mix well, though, and she falls to sleep after a couple of glasses...it must be very individual, is what I've concluded.
