My DH has been suffereing from depression for quite some time.

He finally admitted he needs help and went to the dr last week who has prescribed citalopram.

Any info? How long does it take to kick in? Side effects? etc.

I think it takes a few weeks to kick in, there's a leaflet with it?

I take this.

Minor side effects (very real dreams, upset stomach) if I forget to take a tablet.

Otherwise, very helpful in stabilising my long term depression.

Took a couple of weeks to kick in but I felt a little better from day 1 (probably just because I was doing something about the problem).

I have been on several sorts of antidepressents and this is the least invasive/most normal feeling one I have used.

i have taken lexapro which is the same thing. ads affect different people in different ways so it's difficult to give you definitive answers.

however i found it fantastic. i had been on at least four other types of ads previously, in addition to xanax and olanzapine. i had suffered from some uncomfortable side effects from the other medications but the new wave of these ads are a big improvement.

basically it took a few weeks to kick in for me- maybe three or four. it increased my appetite hugely and i had no libido. but these were small prices to pay for freedom from depression.

hopefully your dh can look for more hel; perhaps with diet, exercise, counselling, stress relief etc. and may only need them for a small amount of time.

best of luck.

I've been on it (2omg) for over a year. Really helped me. Felt sleepy, yawned LOADS all day for first week or so but after that felt much happier. Just things seemed brighter really. Also I lost my appetite for a couple of weeks but this soon returned. Hasn't affected my sex life/ ability to orgasm but I know it does for others.
I just felt like myself again instead of negative sad version. hope it helps your dh x
