Ritalin for adults?

My doctor asked me to consider trying Ritalin as an eventual replacement for Prozac, which I have been taking since 1994. (I suffer from chronic depression). I'm absolutely stunned; know nothing about this drug apart from the fact that it's given to children with ADHD. I've done a bit of googling but am still mystified. Opinions? Experiences? Thx
