Why does being suicidal stop you giving blood?

Went to give blood today - couldn't it transpires because the fracture in my hand needs to fully heal. When the nurse asked how I got it he then said I cannot give blood for at least 6 months - how does giving blood affect mental health - not as if you can pass it on thro blood?! Very puzzled - ideas please?

Oh. I don't know. I just looked online and couldn't see anything about mental health :/. Did you have to have surgery on your hand? Could it be because of that rather than mental health?

There seems to be a lot of discussion on the internet about blood donation and self harming. Perhaps that was the concern?
