I was referred by my GP to the local mental health hospital where I met with a psychiatrist, he diagnosed me with moderate depression, but the traumatic birth of my son resulted in me needing CBT. I am now on the waiting list (which can be 3-4mths!) but I am certainly not paying for it. I have seen a counsellor for 10 weeks, have you already been down that route?

I paid £45/hour and had about 7 sessions over 4 months. It was v v helpful. If you can afford it, I would say go ahead.

I got this/ counselling on my heath insurance (thankfully!). It was £90 per session, although this was in central London in a "stress clinic" so I reckon the price was in the very top bracket. I'm sure you'll be able to find something much more reasonable. It is very, very worthwhile.

I paid £80 per session, had 10 sessions. Very helpful, really helps you realise your bad thinking processes.

If you can't afford cbt, buy a copy of "The Feeling Good Handbook" You can get it off Amazon. It is basically cbt in a nutshell, costs about £14.00 and well worth it. It is like a workbook, that you work through. I usually hate all that American pop psychology claptrap, but this is really different. It has all the different types of distorted thinking at the front of the book, and when I read them it completely blew my mind, and changed the way I thought. Check out "fortune telling"(causes all anxiety) or "black and white" thinking. It is really a helpful book.
