I've been in mirtazapine for while now but the wait gain is getting me down more then I thought it would, although my partner is loving the new extra curvy me, I'm not. I was just wondering has ne1 stopped taking them and have they experienced any side effects. I've so far gone from 30mg to 15mg with no noticeable effect that was about a month ago. Tho now I'm worried if I stop completely I may suffer the side effects I've seen so many posts on on net. Or should I cut down to 7.5 my doc is asking me to wait for a few months but he's not understanding the weight gain is making me feel worse and feeling less self confident as the pounds pile on with no sign of evening out as he first said. Even though I still go to the gym and eat extra healthy nothing works with the weight.

Hi Lally,

I used to take this and struggled with the weight gain too and the appetite it gave me. I changed to Fluoxetine (prozac) and as i remember phased it out while i started the other. maybe you could do this as the prozac doesn't cause weight gain.

I did cut down to 7.5 on the way to coming off Mirtazapine and I did find the weight/food cravings diminished at that point. So it might be worth a try, but yes the other thing you can do it taper is down while gradually switching to something else, if GP can arrange that for you. FYI, I came off it completely and did not have bad side effects from coming off it (perhaps because I tapered so gradually). I saw all those scary posts on the web too!

All my mental health team (all women) have been great about the weight gain, they have been very understanding and totally got that I could not stay on it long-term and keep putting on weight, because that in itself made me unhappy. If I need to go back on ADs they will consider something else for me. Could you see a different (maybe female) doctor?
