I took the first step in admitting that I'm deeply depressed today by going and seeing my GP.

I feel already that a weight has been lifted just the few minutes I had at the appointment, but have concerns over the AD's I've been prescibed. I've not had suicidal feelings, but one of the side affects of the medication is a feeling of wanting to self harm or suicide. I feel I can't handle getting worse than I feel now I know in the long run they will make me feel better, but these side affects are putting me off taking them.

Has anyone else been in this situation and what happened?

Most AD do state this on thier boxes and information leaflets due to people in the past suing them because they claim it caused them to become suicidal or self harm. Its considered a black Box symbol.

There is no garuntee that this will or will not happen to you.

If u leave yr depression untreated whose to say it wouldlead you to self harm or suicide.

Taking AD is a personal decision and u have to outway the pro and con.

It is a real anxiety provoking task reading the risks and side effects leaflet.

But they do this to cover themselves.

It's true suicidal thoughts are a rare side effect on starting ADs but as above important to weigh up benefits of getting better against small risk.
It is important to be aware so that you can speak to someone if any thoughts of self harm started.

If you are really worried about it make another appointment with same GP to talk it over. Maybe if the talking really helped you would get better with talking therapies and could avoid the need for ADs.
