Weight Gain and Fluoxtine

Hello there fellow advisors. Just a quick question to those who have/are taking Fluoxtine....I know that initially they say that you can lose weight, but has anyone ever gained weight? I am about to be weaned off them, have been going to the gym, started councelling and started Weightwatchers. Now after 8 weeks of dedicated WW I have struggled to lose 3 lbs, whereas before WW has always worked wonders. Could it be the Fluoxtine? Additionally I am having a blood test tomorrow to test for under active thyroid due to complete and utter exhaustion - whether it is under active thyroid or just a Post Natallly Depressed single mother of 2 year old angel/devil who knows. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Good question. Maybe that's why I can't seem to shift off the weight this time round. I'll ask my GP this afternoon as I'm also getting weaned off them.

I don't know about Fluoxetine, but all of the ads I've been prescribed say they can cause "weight changes" - either up or down.

It might be worth mentioning that underactive thyroid can cause depression, it's commonly misdiagnosed as PND in new mothers. You might find that your PND has actually been an underactive thyroid all along.

Thanks - good luck Cris - let me know what the doc says and I will look out for you on this board so we can be "weaned" together!!! WWB - I seen that yesterday, but thought I would get tested - am pretty sure it was PND initially though. I am going through a phase of looking rather forlornly at my "summer" wardrobe and just need to know if I can ever wear those clothes again or just stick with a kaftan!!!!!!

Thanks, Bernie. I read that they cause weight loss and I was worried at the beginning because DD is still breastfeeding and she is quite tiny. I mentioned this to the GP (another one, not my regular one) but he said that since I'd taken those ADs before and they worked we should stick to them rather than starting on something else, adjusting dose etc. But I am surprised that I can't lose weight and, if anything, i'm putting some on. I'll let you know what the GP says this evening. We will get into summer clothes.

Yes, bring on the shorts and wave goodbye to the Demis Roosos dress. Chat later
