Hi, I had my first child 7 weeks ago and have been experiencing horrible anxiety. It is based mostly around the fear of something terrible happening to my daughter or my husband. I have been trying breathing exercises and I am able to talk to my husband, who is very supportive, but I can't seem to get rid of the feelings.

I am in contact with the local MH service but was hoping there might be some support available on here as I don't really have anyone else to talk to about it. I really am struggling at the moment and am worried about how I am going to cope with looking after my little girl while my husband is at work for the rest of the week.

Hi, I think you should see your GP. I think anxiety can hit a real high once you have children. Your GP could refer you for CBT which is a talking therapy and helps you change/tackle your negative thinking.

Keep talking on here. Lots of people have been through it but don't be afraid to ask in real life for support.

Do you have any friends who could come round in the day to be with you? Try to find some local groups (post on your local mumsnet site). Speak to your HV, she will know of any classes such as baby massage etc.

Look after yourself.

Thanks sailorsgal,
I have tried CBT for long-standing depression. I don't really have anyone I can talk to but have been getting out and going to groups.

Hi AG,
Panic attacks and anxiety are awful :( Things that have helped me are playing one of those relaxation music cds, twanging elastic bands on my arm to distract from anxious thoughts and feels, and writing lists of things that are worrying me and then counteracting them with rational/logical answers to my worries. Also lavender oil in an oil burner is quite relaxing.
Sorry I can't be more use. I'm on the Anxiety Club thread on here, but it has been quite quiet recently.

Thanks PiggyMad. Ive got some relaxation CDs that I haven't used for a while. I'll give them a try. I've heard of the elastic band technique but never tried it. You have been helpful x
