The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV = Non scale victory

This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

Lost 3 lbs.
Pretty pleased with that considering had sainsburys curry, and other good stuff on nfds.
What is happening to me? I appear to be eating like a normal person on nfds. Totally able to go between meals, not be hungry all the time and just eat a normal sized portion. This WOE is genius.

2nd fast day today. Was going to do adf, but the last two days have been feed days due to me feeling a bit ill and very tired yesterday as dd had me up all the previous night!

Second fd today, and already lost a few pounds. Think that's due to no wine though...

Finished second fast day, was much trickier than the first and a handful of almonds sent me 20Kcal over but chuffed to survive because I became a rabid fridge hoverer mid afternoon
And this morning am 3lb down ( I know it's probably all Xmas bloat but better out than in)

DD poorly now... Pale, temp is up a bit at 37.4, tummy ache. Have calpoled her and she is staying off school today.
First NFD today after first ever FD yesterday, I assumed I'd want something previously 'forbidden' like a bacon sarnie, unaccountably just had one wholemeal toast with Marmite and a coffee, (my wee boy had that yesterday on my FD and I was longing for it), strangely it feels like something very luxurious after yesterday!
Off to do dreaded first weigh in for YEARS (living in denial so long am terrified) and to get in supplies; what's everyone's favourite FD staples?
Planning dinner tonight, faced with the idea that I can have anything, legitimately, I somehow don't want anything crazy, will go for chicken, small baked potato and purple broccoli.
Feeling very excited as the feast and famine aspect of this suits my compulsive personality perfectly...imagine offering a junkie just a LITTLE crack; that's how difficult very low cal diets are for people like me/us? But this is like constant detox/fresh start cycle with a built in occasional naughty function, which seems ideal.
It just remains to be seen if I lose weight consistently (don't see how I can't from fasting twice a week, it MUST work a bit!).

darnley I have lost nearly 80lbs in total now, just on 5:2 alone. The first 70 were what I aimed for and the other 10 have come over the last 3 months whilst I'm trying to find a balance for maintaining. Dh has lost 3 stone too, but he still has some way to go. There's a link to the inspirational thread in the op where we've gathered some of our stories.

Toffee, poor dd-does that mean you get to share a duvet day and have some cuddles on the sofa and watch some films?
I hadn't planned a second fd until tomorrow, but have woken up feeling bloated and horrible this morning and like the 2 nfds have undone all the good work of my first fd. Today would be tricky to fast as have company but am tempted to try. Haven't had brekky yet...
Great to hear of some losses this week and that yesterday's fasters are not waking up ravenous and eating the entire contents of their kitchens!
The fast day resets the appetite.
I find that each non fast day my appetite increases just a little bit so having those fasts twice a week keeps it all in check.
I love this WOE.
zed my staples are caffeine, vegetables (I always keep frozen veg so I never have any excuse not to have a very low cal healthy meal at home) and eggs...oh for the power of eggs. I wouldn't have got through last year without them! Filling and nutritious, they're bloody great. Not the most exciting list of staples but it's fine - it's only for two days a week, now one as I'm maintaining...because I always knew I could have it tomorrow.
FD staples - a variety of herbal teas, Bovril/oxo/marmite/marigold bouillon, miso soup, 10 cal jellies, egg white carton, grapefruit pots, slim noodles. Eggs veg and fish.
Tonight I have some smoked salmon to use up, so I'll make an omelette with one egg and a glug of egg whites, spinach and mushroom. Fake caviar also has very few calories, so a blob of that on top makes it look special.
southeast I'm like you but without the caffeine - peppermint tea for me!
I've lost 3lbs this week too, I did fast on Monday but I think much of it is due to the trauma of living with a teenager, which is curbing my appetite.

Oooh thanks for those...but what are slim noodles? Are they those zero noodles or something? Holland and Baratt?
Eggs will save me too, and salmon. I wonder if I can find decent sushi/sushimi for under 300? (need the other 200 for milky coffees/accidental peanutbutter finger licking).
There's some Ken Hom steamed dumplings with prawn and lemongrass in Tesco, I bet they're under 300, to keep in the freezer for lazy FDs.

Checking in/de-lurking. Didn't 5:2 December and was SWATTH. Chuffed with that. Going jn for my second fast this week and its a post nights one. Just off to bed, last ate 4am. 2 choices facing me. Eat a 130 cal soup tonight or just cups of tea til I go back to bed and last til lunchtime tomorrow (after Spin class).an epic 38 hours! Decisions, decisions. .....
